Kevin Feige opens up about why he isn’t worried about Black Panther 2’s Oscars chances, acknowledging their focus is on pleasing audiences.
While the first film scored multiple nominations from the ceremony, Kevin Feige isn’t worried about Black Panther: Wakanda Forever‘s Oscars chances. The upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel will see the titular nation mourning the loss of Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa following the actor’s passing in mid-2020. Their grief is cut short, however, when they are forced to confront the invading nation of Talokan, led by Tenoch Huerta’s Namor, and must find someone to take up the mantle of Black Panther and defend Wakanda.
Ryan Coogler is once again returning to co-write and direct Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, with the cast also seeing the returns of Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, Martin Freeman and Angela Bassett, as well as the MCU debuts of Huerta, Dominique Thorne, and Michaela Coel. Anticipation has been high for a Black Panther sequel since the first movie came out and set multiple records for the MCU, and film as a whole, becoming the highest-grossing film directed by a Black filmmaker and landing seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. It would ultimately only bring home three Oscar wins, leaving many to hope for the next film to properly bring in some major awards, though one of the minds behind Black Panther: Wakanda Forever isn’t keeping this in mind.
While speaking with Total Film (via ComicBook.com), Kevin Feige opened up about his thoughts on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever‘s Oscars chances. The Marvel head explained that he and the studio weren’t worried about whether it would draw in nominations from the Academy, instead choosing to focus their efforts on delivering a pleasing follow-up for audiences. I’m not the kind to predict what the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will do with their precious votes. I don’t know. I do know that Ryan and the entire team approached this movie just like they approached the first one, which is: how do we make the best experience possible for the audience? And how do we make the best experience that people will want to repeat again and again? That was the driving motivation. And something that is an incredible tribute to the legacy of Chadwick. This one rides a fine line of a real-life tribute and yet continuing the fictional narrative and the hope and – I just keep going back to that word – optimism that Wakanda always represents.
How Black Panther 2 Could Change Marvel’s Oscars History
Given the amount of time Coogler and Marvel spent reworking the story for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in the wake of Boseman’s death, many are hopeful that the film lives up to the high bar set by its predecessor, which still sits as the highest-rated MCU movie on Rotten Tomatoes. Anticipation had begun to wane during production on the film until the first trailers began rolling out, teasing a very emotional story seeking to honor Boseman, while still building out the world to carry on the Black Panther’s legacy. With this amount of care put behind it, many are already calling for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to bring home multiple Oscars, ranging from the technical efforts to the acting of Angela Bassett and Coogler’s direction.
Much like its predecessor, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever could change Marvel’s history at the Oscars by finally bringing home one of the major categories’ awards, be it the Best Picture the original lost to Green Book, or Best Director, which many felt Coogler was snubbed for the first time around. Given the Academy often looks favorably upon projects in which someone involved passed prior to or during production, even the comic book genre with Heath Ledger’s win for his turn as Joker in The Dark Knight, it seems possible the MCU sequel could be the studio’s first big success at the ceremony. Only time will tell how reviews fare for the film leading up to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever‘s November 11 release.
