Dance experience may get contestants far on Dancing With The Stars, but some of the most enjoyable couples to watch are the ones with the most chemistry. This season, Charli D’Amelio and Mark Ballas, Gabby Windey and Val Chmerkovskiy, and Wayne Brady and Witney Carson have come out on top each week. The three celebrity contestants have dance experience, which has given them an advantage over some of the other contestants. However, judge Derek Hough has praised Vinny Guadagnino for being so enjoyable on the dance floor even though some other judges have given him harsh critiques for his performances.
Luckily, dance experience is not the most crucial aspect of DWTS, but the dynamic between the dance partners is. The chemistry between partners comes across in every dance, especially in more intimate routines like the Vietnamese Waltz. During DWTS season 31 premiere night, Selma Blair and Sasha Farber performed a Vietnamese Waltz to “The Time of My Life” by David Cook, bringing judges and contestants like Jordin Sparks to tears. Selma has been battling multiple sclerosis (MS) for years, and watching her move through her routine flawlessly despite her condition was emotional in itself. However, Sasha has been so patient and understanding of her circumstances, and it’s led the two to have a strong connection that shines through on the dance floor.
Some DWTS Couples’ Chemistry Has Led To Fan Rumors
During DWTS season 21, Derek had amazing chemistry with his partner Bindi Irwin. The wildlife conservationist dedicated an emotional performance to her late father, Steve Irwin, and Derek showed compassion for his partner during rehearsals and when she broke down crying during their performance. It’s no wonder why the two won the mirrorball trophy. They appeared to possess a deep understanding of each other that, unfortunately, not all DWTS couples have. The same is true of season 30 finalists JoJo Siwa and Jenna Johnson. The pair were the first same-sex couple, and they formed a strong friendship throughout the season that made them fun to watch each week. They utilized this bond on the show, which impressed judges and fans voting from home.
The best part about DWTS is that any celebrity can join, whether they’ve danced before or not. The show allows them to grow and improve as the weeks go on. This was the case for Iman Shumpert, who won DWTS season 30. Being a seasoned dancer doesn’t guarantee a win, but it’s the relationship they have with their partner that matters most. Fans also pick up on the chemistry, and how much they like a couple together will determine whether or not they’ll vote for them. Sometimes the chemistry is so strong that fans are convinced something more must be going on with the couple. DWTS performer Gleb Savchenko was accused of having an affair with his season 23 partner Jana Kramer and his season 29 partner Chrishell Stause.
Similar rumors spread about Val Chmerkovskiy and Olivia Jade during DWTS season 30, but all parties involved have denied the allegations. However, Nikki Bella had strong chemistry with her DWTS season 25 partner, Artem Chigvintsev, and the two are now married. While fans love to theorize, plenty of contestants were not romantically involved with their partners but still had a magnetic connection that moved them through the season.
However, some may argue this is not the case. During DWTS season 28, The Bachelorette star Hannah Brown won the mirrorball trophy with her partner Alan Bersten. When she released her book in 2021, the star admitted that she didn’t have a great relationship with Alan, and they argued quite a lot throughout the season. Luckily, this wasn’t visible on the dance floor, and the two were able to fake their bond til the season finale. However, despite Hannah and Alan’s ups and downs, most successful DWTS couples build on their relationship throughout the season just as much as they build upon their dance skills. This connection keeps fans and judges entertained all season long.
Dancing With The Stars airs Mondays at 8 PM on Disney+.
