Whoopi Goldberg’s Ideal Sister Act 3 Cast Includes 2 Huge Music Stars

Whoopi Goldberg reveals that her dream cast for Sister Act 3 includes Lizzo and Nicki Minaj. Thirty years after the first movie in the franchise made its debut, it looks like a third Sister Act movie could finally be a go. The 1992 feature film told the story of Deloris Van Cartier, a lounge singer who witnesses her mobster boyfriend commit murder. For her protection, she is relocated to California where they set up a new life for her as a nun in a convent. When she has trouble adjusting to her new life, she gets a new assignment to lead the convent’s choir.

Sister Act was such a success in the box office in 1992, that a sequel did not take long to follow. Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit premiered in 1993, garnering a total of $125 million worldwide. While it was not a staggering success when compared to the first movie in the franchise, the second film still became a fan-favorite from the 90s along with its first iteration, with the Sister Act franchise also getting a musical theater adaptation in the early 2000s. With this cult following, a Sister Act 3 was finally confirmed to be in the works in 2020, with things have been slow-going, though Goldberg recently confirmed that the script should be ready within the next month, and now is sharing her thoughts on what comes next.

In an interview on Comedy Central’s Hell of A Week, Goldberg, who is currently a host at The View, was asked about the status of the eagerly anticipated Sister Act 3. Admitting that getting things done in Hollywood takes a while, Goldberg reaffirmed that the threequel is happening and that a script is coming next month, and also shared her hopes for who can appear in the film, hilarious calling for “the girl with the chest,” whom host Charlamagne Tha God correctly guesses Nicki Minaj. See what Goldberg said below:

“I’m gonna ask Keke [Palmer] to come. You know, I want everybody to come in. I want Lizzo to come. I want everybody. I want as many people who want to have some fun, because I really, desperately need to have some fun.”

What To Expect From The Potential Sister Act 3?

Goldberg’s casting pitching for Sister Act 3 would certainly make a dream roster with powerhouse names in today’s music industry. Though best known for their musical prowess, both Minaj and Lizzo have tried their hands at acting before in Barbershop: Back in Business and Hustlers, the latter of which also featured Keke Palmer. Goldberg is partnering with Tyler Perry on the production team for Sister Act 3, while High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ creator Tim Federle will don the director’s hat on the project. Perry has recently commented that things have been moving slower than he would like, but that they have a good script on their hands.

With Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit seeing much of the choir learn of Deloris’ real identity as a jazz lounge singer, it will be interesting to see how Sister Act 3 picks up the plot 30 years later. Given Hollywood has become well-known for its legacy sequels, which largely ignore poorly received sequels, it will be interesting to see if the creative team behind the threequel elect to skip over the plot of the poorly 1993 sequel, or craft a story to help correct the flaws of the prior movie, as Hocus Pocus 2 recently did. While audiences await details on the long-awaited Sister Act 3, they can revisit the original two movies streaming on Disney+ now.
