Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy season 3 featured some incredible arcs for all the Hargreeves siblings, but The Umbrella Academy season 4 is already threatening to ruin Luther’s character growth. Throughout the first season, Luther is very self-conscious of his body and even runs away when the rest of his siblings see what became of his body after they had all left the academy. During Umbrella Academy season 2, Luther apologizes to Victor for his misdoings the previous season, learning some humility. More importantly, Luther also becomes more comfortable in his ape body in season 2. He can be seen in a fighting ring wearing a tank top, something that seemed impossible for him in the previous season.
Luther finally fully learns to love others and himself in the third season. It is a personal character arc in season 1 that Luther is ashamed of his ape body, but by the end of season 3, Luther allows himself to love and be loved by Sloane, who he marries. However, the finale of season 3 sets up the potential for The Umbrella Academy season 4, the final season of the Netflix Original, to ruin all of Luther Hargreeves’, aka Number One’s important character development.
Why Luther Learned To Accept Himself In Umbrella Academy Season 3
In The Umbrella Academy season 3, Luther lets go of some of the guilt he had about previous mistakes. He and Five even see the new reality as a way to start over. They no longer have Reginald controlling their lives, and for the first time, it’s theirs to live. When Luther is kidnapped by The Sparrow Academy, he meets and falls in love with Sloane. While their love is a little unconventional, Sloane loves Luther for who he is, and it makes him a better person. When they get married, it is the happiest that his siblings and viewers have seen him. The Umbrella Academy season 3 ending sees Luther’s body back in his human form after the timeline reset, however, something only seen before in his dream-like dance scene with Allison or in flashbacks. This ending also gives Five back the arm he lost, and heals Diego’s hand, which had lost a couple of fingers. While the finale seemingly heals the Hargreeves siblings, it also comes at a cost for all the progress Luther has made in accepting himself for who he is.
Umbrella Academy Season 4 Can Perfectly Finish Luther’s Arc Still
The Umbrella Academy season 4 will likely revolve around the Hargreeves siblings trying to get their powers back, as it was learned that when their bodies healed, they were also stripped of their powers. It is also hinted that the siblings will be forced to face off against their father, Reginald, one final time. This impending conflict may see The Umbrella Academy season 4 allowing Luther to wrap up his character arc. Luther’s character arc seems to have come to a natural end with him accepting himself with his marriage to Sloane, but now it seems the writers may have something else in mind. By having Luther choose to regain his ape body, it would be a more active form of self-acceptance, thus bringing his character arc full circle.
There is a lot that needs to happen to properly wrap up the Hargreeves siblings’ collective story and individual stories when the fourth and final season comes out on Netflix. It would be interesting to see Luther reunite with Sloane and see her reaction to his human body, but it wouldn’t be doing Luther’s character arc any justice. Here’s hoping Luther finally vocally accepts himself and his body in The Umbrella Academy season 4.
