The Stranger Things writers reveal a cut storyline that would have Hopper teaming up with Alexei’s dad in season 4 of the hit Netflix series.
The Stranger Things writers reveal a deleted season 4 Hopper subplot. The Duffer brothers’ nostalgic 80s horror series became a pop culture phenomenon with the release of season 1 in 2016 and has only grown in popularity with each installment since. Stranger Things wrapped up season 4, which was split into two parts, in July this year, rising to become the second most-watched show on Netflix. Season 5 of the hit series is currently in preproduction and is expected to be Stranger Things‘ final season.
While Stranger Things followers wait for news about season 5, the show’s writers’ room has been keeping them occupied by sharing interesting tidbits about past seasons on their official Twitter account. Among the behind-the-scenes content, the writers began posting a list of deleted plot points, fittingly titled, “Crazy s**t that almost happened.” The first post from the series revealed that Will (Noah Schnapp) was going to kill Bob (Sean Astin) while possessed by the Mind Flayer in Stranger Things season 2. The second shared that they almost had Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) “mercy kill” her mother in the same season. Now the writing team has returned with a third surprising deleted storyline.
Although the other rejected plots would have added more trauma for Stranger Things’ heroes, the third was thankfully lighter. In a new post, the Stranger Things writers revealed an abandoned subplot that would have linked back to season 3’s short-lived fan-favorite character Alexei (Alec Utgoff). Captioned as “Crazy s**t that almost happened #3,” the writers shared that Hopper (David Harbour) was going to team up with Alexei’s dad in Stranger Things season 4. Check out the tweet below:
What Would Hopper Have Been Doing With Alexei’s Dad?
Of course, there’s no guaranteed way to know how the Stranger Things writers would have introduced Alexei’s dad to the show, but based on seasons 3 and 4, there are a couple of viable options they could have been considering. Since Hopper was abducted by the Russians at the end of Stranger Things season 3, he could have met Alexei’s dad in prison, so he possibly could have either been a prisoner or a guard. While Alexei’s dad could have replaced Enzo (Tom Wlaschiha) in season 4 and acted as the guard who helps Hopper contact Joyce (Winona Ryder), it seems more likely that Alexei’s dad would also be a prisoner. The Russians would have arrested him both to punish his son’s betrayal and to tie off loose ends. It even could have been possible that Alexei’s dad could have joined Hopper in his escape.
Even though the writers’ room ultimately decided not to include Alexei’s dad, it is interesting to consider how he might have changed Stranger Things season 4’s tone. The link back to Alexei would have added another emotional through line for the series and added weight to Alexei’s death. It also could have allowed Hopper to vocalize his feelings toward Eleven because he’d finally met another dad he could connect with. Still, Stranger Things season 4 was already criticized for being overstuffed, so perhaps it’s for the best that Alexei’s dad was rejected.
