She-Hulk Star Tatiana Maslany Addresses Divisive Season Finale

Star Tatiana Maslany addresses the divisive finale to Disney+’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and doesn’t mind that some MCU fans didn’t like it.

Warning! Spoilers ahead for the She-Hulk: Attorney at Law season 1 finale.She-Hulk: Attorney at Law star Tatiana Maslany comments on the divisiveness of the show’s very meta season 1 finale. Created by Jessica Gao, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is the latest MCU show to land on Disney+, joining the likes of Loki, Moon Knight, and Ms. Marvel. The show chronicles the life of Maslany’s Jennifer Walters as she attempts to balance her career as a California attorney with her ability to transform into the superhero She-Hulk. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law has been a hit with critics but slightly more divisive among audiences, with many taking issue with the show’s departure from MCU conventions and its self-aware approach to toxic Marvel fandom.

After episode 8 featured the triumphant (but also divisive) return of Charlie Cox’s Daredevil, episode 9 brought She-Hulk: Attorney at Law to a close. The episode begins by setting up a major confrontation between She-Hulk and HulkKing (Jon Bass) and his small army of Intelligencia, but then breaks the fourth wall in a more extreme way than previous episodes as Walters travels to Marvel Studios to have her ending rewritten. While there, She-Hulk encounters K.E.V.I.N., the artificial intelligence equivalent of Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, who is responsible for determining the overall direction of the MCU.

In a new interview with Extra, Tatiana Maslany acknowledges that she’s aware that the She-Hulk: Attorney at Law finale has been divisive among fans. Although some viewers weren’t on board with the show’s drastic departures from the more standard MCU formula, the star makes it clear that she won’t hold it against them. Check out Maslany’s full comment below:

“I just want them to know that I feel like whatever you feel about that finale is great. I love that people have trouble with it. It’s difficult for some people and other people are like, what a relief. I think it’s challenging in the sense that it just dissembles a lot of things that we know to be true, and I think that’s a very exciting notion.”

During She-Hulk’s visit to Marvel Studios headquarters in the finale, the show acknowledges some frequent problems that affect MCU movies, including the need for bombastic, plot-heavy finales and the studio’s handling of past female characters. Although She-Hulk: Attorney at Law‘s acknowledgment of these problems doesn’t guarantee that they will change right away, it does open the door for Marvel to try some exciting new things in the future. The fact that She-Hulk: Attorney at Law‘s finale played out the way it did suggests that audiences might be treated to more risk-taking from the studio in the future.

Many criticisms surrounding Marvel during Phases 1, 2, and 3 regarded the films’ similar structures and their formulaic approach to origin stories. While evidently not striking a chord for all fans, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’s unorthodox storytelling seems to be a part of a larger push from the studio to try new things, which could bode well for the MCU’s Phase 5 and Phase 6. It remains to be seen whether She-Hulk: Attorney at Law will return for season 2 on Disney+, but the finale certainly opens up some exciting possibilities regarding which MCU elements the show could deconstruct in the future.
