She-Hulk: Attorney at Law head writer Jessica Gao explains why there was no Madisynn in the finale. Now that it’s ended, it’s safe to say that She-Hulk was one of the MCU’s different and ultimately divisive projects. On the more extreme end, as the show presciently predicted, there were dismissive viewers who weren’t interested in a story centered on a woman’s perspective. But more understandably, even among those who were excited about the show, there was a feeling that it didn’t always deliver on the legal comedy premise and the important themes promised.
But one aspect of She-Hulk that found the widespread agreement was the introduction of Patty Guggenheim as Madisynn in episode 4. The character’s friendship with Wong (Benedict Wong) and their binge bonding of shows like The Sopranos. Their dynamic, and Guggenheim’s portrayal, proved to be such a hit that many fans wondered when she might appear next. Gao even admitted that she regretted the fact that Madisynn does not appear in the She-Hulk finale.
Now, in an interview with TVLine, Gao is shedding light on why there’s no Madisynn in the She-Hulk ending. The head writer explained that the finale was the first episode that was filmed, so they couldn’t have anticipated how popular Madisynn would become with audiences and that the role wasn’t even cast at that point. Gao’s quote is included below.
“She was definitely a favorite character. But we wrote the whole season before casting it. We all were completely delighted with the character, but never in writing her did we think that she would go that big! It wasn’t until Patty Guggenheim was cast and we saw her work that we were like, ‘Ohhh, this is going to be a breakout character — the Madisynn Supremacy.’ But if I had known it was Patty Guggenheim from the beginning, she absolutely would have been in not just the finale, but more episodes.”
Will Madisynn Return To The MCU?
While it’s worth stressing that nothing is confirmed at this point, it does seem likely that Guggenheim will return as Madisynn at some point and in some future MCU project. So far, the Disney+ shows have not had a big effect on the movies. But the threads are incorporated in small ways. For example, Kat Dennings first returned as Darcy in WandaVision before showing up in Thor: Love and Thunder. On a similar front, the Doctor Strange sequel includes a few lines of dialogue that acknowledge WandaVision though it’s not a focus. This rough template suggests that Madisynn could appear the next time her buddy, Wong, does. Their friendship would likely already be established, as a nod to fans that have watched She-Hulk.
Marvel is typically pretty good about bringing back characters or elements that fans have enjoyed. So, going off that history, it’s likely we’ll see Madisynn again even if there’s no She-Hulk: Attorney at Law season 2. She could be spoiling the latest prestige TV series for Wong, in the background of a scene. Although, based on what Madisynn herself says, she just might not pop up in exactly the projects that you think.
