This List Contains Spoilers For The Finale Of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law!
The fourth wall is never going to look the same thanks to the epic season finale of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Jennifer Walters smashed her way from her universe to the Disney+ menu to the “real world,” confronting her show’s writers and the overlord, KEVIN, to make one of the most unique episodes of the television in the MCU so far. She’s been able to break the fourth wall ever since her second series in the comics, The Sensational She-Hulk by John Byrne, starting in 1989.
This ability and her meta-humor throughout She-Hulk: Attorney at Law made the show a refreshing installment to the MCU, enhancing the franchise, while also poking fun at it, its creators, and even the audience. Yet, in the end, they never masked her compelling narrative of learning to be both Jen and She-Hulk and her vast potential in this world. She-Hulk’s fourth-wall-breaking skills are getting their due attention, but she is far from the other hero capable of doing this. Whether talking to their writers or just to the audiences, these superheroes can all smash through the fourth wall in their own special way.
Deadpool Has Broken The Fourth Wall Multiple Times In The Marvel Comics And Movies
Before She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, if asking the general, casual audiences of superhero movies to name a meta-character, they’d naturally say Deadpool. Thanks to Deadpool and Deadpool 2, he is the shining example of fourth-wall-breaking to many people. Like She-Hulk, the Merc with a Mouth didn’t start right out of the gate with it – he debuted in 1991 in The New Mutants #98, but it wasn’t until 1997 with Deadpool #11 that he first broke through the fourth wall.
He’ll soon be doing it again in live-action, and joyfully he won’t be alone. Hugh Jackman is returning as Wolverine alongside Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool 3 (which is set to hit theaters on November 8th, 2024). Fans already have some funny and clever theories about Deadpool 3, and after that, he and She-Hulk can finally interact, which could add some hilarious moments in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and/or Avengers: Secret Wars.
Gwenpool Has Broken Through The Fourth Wall Multiple Times In The Marvel Comics
Although She-Hulk and Deadpool’s ability to break through the fourth wall was an eventual development, for Gwenpool, it’s her whole deal. Since being introduced in Howard the Duck vol. 6 #1 in 2015, Gwen Poole has become a popular and prolific character in the comics. However, some fans think she might be too weird or complicated for the MCU; while Deadpool and She-Hulk break the fourth wall, Gwenpool eliminates it from existence.
Gwenpool is an obvious amalgam of Gwen Stacy and Deadpool, but in reality, she is a self-appointed comics superfan, who claims to be from the real world. With her powers to literally rewrite the comics she is in and can travel anywhere, along with her armory of weapons, Gwenpool is actually one of the most powerful characters in the comics. It is still way too early for a character like her to be in the MCU, but perhaps one day she’ll have a place there.
Ambush Bug Has Broken The Fourth Wall Several Times In The DC Comics
On the DC Comics side of things, there are just as many heroes who can smash through the fourth wall like She-Hulk, including Ambush Bug. Like Gwenpool, Ambush Bug is just a strange character with complicated and confusing origins. They date back to DC Comics Presents #52 in 1982, wherein he was a Superman villain, but he’s developed into the weird anti-hero he is today over the following four decades.
Irwin Schwab’s powers come from his suit – which has parallel origins to Superman, being sent from a dying planet named Schwab – granting him teleportation, invulnerability, and awareness that he is a comic book character. Given the state of the franchise, there’s probably not a place for him in the DCEU, unless it’s part of Suicide Squad 3 in light of what James Gunn was able to do for characters like Ratcatcher and Polka-Dot Man. Alternatively, he could find a home in Doom Patrol or Harley Quinn.
Slapstick Has Also Broken The Fourth Wall Multiple Times In The Marvel Comics
After Deadpool 3 if the MCU is looking for a third character to break the fourth wall, they should consider Slapstick. The clown-like superhero is a walking cartoon in a comic book and can materialize weapons and items out of thin air like he’s in Looney Tunes. This would make him an interesting addition to the MCU, to say the least.
As the Multiverse expands and more animated shows like What If…? or Marvel Zombies release, there could be a place for Slapstick in the MCU, especially if it means he’s a cartoon in live-action. One such reality was shown in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as Doctor Strange and America Chavez fell through various universes (so there is a possibility Slapstick hails from that reality). Upon featuring in the MCU, he could even ask the audiences to tweet and beg for him to get his own film or tv show, like how he did in The Awesome Slapstick.
DC Comics Fans Know Bat-Mite Has Broken The Fourth Wall Multiple Times
Predating Deadpool and even She-Hulk is Bat-mite, a god-like obsessed fan of Batman. This is another character that most would think is too weird for the DCEU if it wasn’t for Peacemaker confirming his existence. He was first introduced in 1959 in Detective Comics #267, but it wasn’t until the animated series Batman: The Brave and the Bold fifty years later that he breaks the fourth wall, referencing Batman’s comics.
It would certainly be interesting to see if Bat-Mite ever physically appears in the DCEU – although first, they have to make Batman and his supporting characters mainstays in the franchise. Like Ambush Bug, in the meanwhile, he could have a future in Harley Quinn, especially since she’s now part of the Bat Family, so maybe instead he’d be Harley-Mite.
Animal Man Is Also Capable Of Breaking The Fourth Wall In The DC Comics
Another DC Comics hero capable of breaking the fourth wall is Animal Man, but unlike the rest who are largely comedic characters, it is quite sad when he does it. He wasn’t the most popular or well-known character following his introduction in Strange Adventures #180 in 1965, but when Grant Morrison took over with Animal Man in 1988, he got a second and more interesting life.
During that run on top of his heroics protecting animals and promoting veganism, he had conversations with Morrison himself about the tragic deaths of his family. There’s probably no better example of comic book commentary than that run by Morrison which explores the relationship between a creator and their creations. It’s such a great series that it could make a perfect live-action miniseries, whether in the DCEU or independently.
Rick Jones Is Capable Of Breaking The Fourth Wall In The Marvel Comics
In the finale of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, She-Hulk rewrote the climax, eliminating her foe Todd’s new gamma powers. While he won’t be hulking out again, there are some other gamma mutates who would be welcome sights in the MCU still, including Rick Jones. He is an incredibly prolific character throughout the comics as an ally to Hulk, Captain America, and multiple Captain Marvels, and on one occurrence, Rick Jones has broken the fourth wall.
His comic awareness allowed him to know that the Captain Marvel series he was in at the time had been canceled and he spoke with the strange entity, Eulogy, who was there to wrap things up. With a new Hulk movie in sight thanks to the finale of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, hopefully, Rick Jones can finally arrive in the MCU. Whether he becomes A-Bomb or not, it would be interesting to see if they explore his comic awareness alongside She-Hulk in live-action.
Marvel Comic Fans Know Squirrel Girl Is Capable Of Breaking The Fourth Wall
If there is one weird and underrated hero perfect for the MCU, it’s Squirrel Girl. As her name implies she can speak with squirrels and has her own busy tail like a squirrel. She’s put her skills to good work as a member of the Great Lake Avengers – the Midwestern faction also including Mr. Immortal who was introduced in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.
Squirrel Girl isn’t alone in breaking the fourth wall as her squirrel companions, Tippy-Toe and Monkey-Joe have been known to directly address the audience and creators too. That would be something interesting to see when she finally makes her MCU debut, but whether they keep that characteristic or not, ideally, the wait isn’t much longer.
Ultra Comics Has Broken The Fourth Wall In The DC Comics
While some characters have comics awareness or talk with their writers, there is no character quite like Ultra Comics. He was first created, also by Grant Morrison, for 2015’s The Multiversity: Ultra Comics series. He hails from Earth-Prime – which is technically the real world outside the comics – where superheroes aren’t real. Memesmiths created him with a form made of comic books and powers granted by the collective minds of their readers.
As such, like Gwenpool, there really is no fourth wall for Ultra Comics and to an extent, he can write his own story. That would make for an incredibly complicated character that many viewers would find too confusing, even for an animated show, so Ultra Comics should remain where he has powers, in comic books.
Loki Has Broken The Fourth Wall Multiple Times In The Marvel Comics
One last character that the MCU could give fourth-wall-breaking powers to is Loki. Over the years, he’s become self-aware of being in a comic book, even telling Deadpool as much (though they too already knew). It might need to be explained why he wasn’t able to do so from his introduction in Thor, but many fans would love to see Tom Hiddleston break the fourth wall as Loki.
As the MCU continues to explore new forms and mediums of storytelling and all the weird universes that come with it, perhaps there’s a chance audiences could see a scene from Young Avengers play out. Kid Loki and Wiccan are transported to a dimension resembling a comic book panel, and he could then move freely between the panels. That would be something quite fun for the MCU and could make Loki even more popular.
