Pokémon GO is celebrating Día de Muertos in a couple of weeks with a new event and plenty of cute costumed Pokémon. Día de Muertos, or “The Day of the Dead,” is celebrated in Mexico and other parts of the Americas in the first two days of November and centers around the lives and the memory of loved ones who have passed away. Games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Humankind have celebrated Día de Muertos with special in-game events featuring unlockable costumes and other special items.
Pokémon GO is no stranger to celebrating supernatural holidays, as the upcoming Pokémon GO Halloween 2022 event will put the spotlight on creepy collectible creatures like Zubat, Haunter, and Dusclops later this week. Last year’s Día de Muertos was also the subject of a special Pokémon GO event where Pokémon like Cubone, Murkrow, and Houndour appeared to aspiring trainers more often and players could equip their in-game avatars with a special Día de Muertos t-shirt. Now, Pokémon GO is celebrating Día de Muertos once again with even more fun items and Pokémon variants for players to collect and enjoy.
Today, developer Niantic announced the details of this year’s Pokémon GO Día de Muertos celebration event, which will begin on November 1 at 10 AM and continue until November 2 at 8 PM. According to the official Pokémon GO website, players who log into the game during this time can encounter new costumed Pokémon GO variants of Duskull, Dusclops, and Dusknoir wearing a cempasúchil crown – a colorful flower headband that is often associated with Día de Muertos. Players will also come across Cubone, Chinchou, Sunkern, Roselia, Litwick, and Swirlix during wild encounters, and especially lucky trainers may encounter Drifloon and Yamask alongside the cempasúchil crown-wearing Duskull. Some of these Pokémon will appear more frequently to players who use Incense and Lure Modules, and certain ones will be featured in Field Research Task Encounters and Raids during the Día de Muertos celebration. Players will also be able to complete the Día de Muertos Collection Challenge to encounter an Alolan Marowak. Finally, players can purchase special Día de Muertos t-shirts and skull makeup for their Pokémon GO avatars, even after the Pokémon GO Día de Muertos 2022 event ends on November 2022.
Pokémon GO Celebrates Día de Muertos With New Pokémon Variants And Items
Fittingly enough, all the Pokémon featured in this year’s Pokémon GO Día de Muertos event are themed after ghosts, flowers, or skulls in one way or another. The most notable example of this is Cubone, as its surprisingly dark and tragic Pokémon Red and Blue backstory is tied to the haunted Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town. According to official Pokémon lore, the bony mask Cubone wears is the skull of its dead mother, and some fans have theorized that the sad little Ground-type Pokémon is actually the orphaned offspring of the kangaroo-like Kangaskhan.
This connection to skulls and death makes Cubone a fitting representative for Pokémon GO’s Día de Muertos 2022 celebration alongside Ghost-type creatures like Duskull, and trainers who log into Pokémon GO during Día de Muertos can collect special variants of these cute and spooky Pokémon. This fun, supernatural Pokémon Go event will last throughout the first two days of November, at the same time the rest of the world is honoring the dearly departed during the Day of the Dead.
