The next Spider-Man trilogy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe needs to finally bring Miles Morales into the franchise. Tom Holland’s Peter Parker has gone on an amazing arc, with Spider-Man: No Way Home providing his origin in an unusually late point in his narrative and garnering great acclaim. Through the movie’s story with the multiverse as its basis, No Way Home brought multiple Spider-Men aboard to battle villains in the MCU with the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s versions.
Meanwhile, another Wall-Crawler is ready to finally swing into the MCU himself, namely Miles Morales, whom audiences already know well as the star of Sony’s animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse franchise and from appearing in the game Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Following the ending of No Way Home and with a new MCU Spider-Man trilogy in development in the MCU, the foundation has been set for Miles to make his grand debut in the MCU. In addition to Miles having been set up at numerous points throughout Tom Holland’s time as Spider-Man, the ending of No Way Home also sets up both classic Spidey traits for Holland’s Peter Parker and a new status quo for him, one where Miles has never been more needed.
The MCU Has Repeatedly Teased Miles Morales
While Miles has yet to make a physical appearance in the MCU, he has been alluded to on numerous occasions by different characters. The first notable example was in Spider-Man: Homecoming in the scene where Peter webs Aaron Davis (Donal Glover) to a car in order to get information about the underground crime ring run by Adrian Toomes (Michael Keaton). In the comics, Aaron Davis is the uncle of Miles Morales, mentioning he has a nephew in the scene. Furthermore, a deleted scene from Homecoming even shows Aaron calling Miles on his cell phone, and while not technically canonical as a deleted scene, it nonetheless shows the intent to set up Miles for his future MCU debut.
No Way Home also makes a coy reference to Miles in the conversation between The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘s Electro (Jamie Foxx) and Peter #3 (Andrew Garfield) after the villain’s de-powering. Following words of encouragement from Peter #3, Max Dillon mentions that he “thought you was gonna be black“, following up with “There’s gotta be a black Spider-Man out there somewhere,” another very clear tease of the eventual arrival of Miles in the MCU. It is also fitting that it should be found in Spider-Man: No Way Home, as the ending of the film may have fully opened the door for him.
Peter Parker Needs Help In His Post-No Way Home Life
In No Way Home‘s ending, Peter makes a great sacrifice by having Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) erase the memory of him from the entire world in order to keep other villains from throughout the multiverse from entering the MCU. Peter also breaks his promise to M.J. (Zendaya) to restore her and Ned Leeds’ (Jacob Batalon) memories of him, out of concern for their safety, leaving Peter completely and totally alone (though the world’s memory of Spider-Man remains intact). Just barely into adulthood, Peter Parker is facing a lonely and uncertain future in having to start over under such circumstances, and a friend or two would be of great help.
Miles Morales could be the ideal ally Peter could use to navigate his world being turned upside-down. Miles will be meeting Peter from the same starting point as everyone else in having no idea who he is, but their shared spider powers could get them on the same page very quickly. Adding to the Miles mandate, No Way Home also set the bar very high for future Spider-Man films, even setting up a problem for Spider-Man movie villains with just how well it handled its collection of them. All of these elements made No Way Home a true tribute to the Web-Slinger that audiences embraced to make the first $1 billion hit since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Miles could be just the character, to help Spider-Man 4 follow up on No Way Home‘s popularity by adding something fresh to the MCU Spider-Man adventures.
How Miles Morales Can Factor Into The MCU
Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame provided a perfectly tailored opening for Miles to get his spider powers via the fact that Peter was effectively dead for the five years between the films after the apocalyptic snap of Thanos (Josh Brolin). In that time, Miles could well have been gifted with his own spider powers and may have begun experimenting with becoming another Spider-Man himself by the time of Spider-Man: No Way Home. That could also enable the MCU to wisely bypass Miles’s traditional origin as it did with Peter. Miles being inspired by his hero Spider-Man could make his meeting with Peter land even harder with Miles learning the situation Peter is in, and could establish a Peter-Miles team-up as the basis for Spider-Man 4.
While Sony and Marvel are said to be outlining a new trilogy for Holland’s Spider-Man, they will sooner or later be faced with the dilemma of how best to keep a Spider-Man presence in the MCU when Tom Holland decides he is ready to depart the franchise. Miles Morales being the second Spider-Man of the MCU could be just the beginning of his story with Miles becoming Peter’s eventual successor. With Miles already the central player of Sony’s Into the Spide-Verse franchise, partnering with Peter after Doctor Strange’s tragic spell in No Way Home and Web-Slinging with him before eventually becoming the MCU’s main Spider-Man could be how Marvel finally delivers on its Miles Morales teases.
The massive success of Spider-Man: No Way Home cemented the Web-Head as a box office titan beloved by audiences around the world. It’s popularity also showed the potential of multiple Spider-Men teaming up with the return of Maguire and Garfield, while the arrival of Miles Morales would be a completely different type of partnership of Web-Slinging heroes. With Maguire and Garfield continuing their respective stories as Peter Parkers of other worlds in No Way Home, Miles Morales would be a whole Spider-Man origin story. The MCU having dropped bread crumbs on the trail to his eventual arrival, Miles Morales being Peter Parker’s trusted ally in Spider-Man 4 (hopefully ending Spidey’s “home” titles) could have the added bonus of setting up Miles’s own Spider-Man future for years to come.
