Warning: SPOILERS for House of the Dragon Episode 9 – “The Green Council” – And Future EpisodesMysaria (Sonoya Mizuno) apparently died in House of the Dragon episode 9, but appearances can be deceiving, and it’s very likely the White Worm still lives. Mysaria was targeted by Lord Larys Strong (Matthew Needham) and Ser Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) as they sought to eliminate any impediments or threats to their installing Aegon Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney) as the new King of Westeros. But as the Master of Whisperers in this era of Game of Thrones‘ history, it’s doubtful Mysaria actually died in the fire Larys Strong’s minions set.
The White Worm confronted the Hand of the King face-to-face in House of the Dragon episode 9. Otto Hightower had relied on Mysaria’s spies for information on Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock) in the past, but it’s doubtful the Hand knew Mysaria the true identity of the White Worm. It is likely, however, that Lord Hand recognized Mysaria as Prince Daemon Targayren’s (Matt Smith) mistress when they confronted each at Dragonstone in House of the Dragon episode 2. Mysaria wanted the end of children being forced into fight pits in Flea Bottom, and this ties into the existence of Aegon’s secret bastard that also threatens Otto’s plans to usurp the Iron Throne with a new King. While it’s possible Otto would have parlayed with Mysaria and let her continue as the leader of King’s Landing’s spy network, it was likely when Mysaria told Otto to remember that she was the one who put Aegon on the Iron Throne that made the Hand realize the White Worm is too dangerous to let live. Thus, Otto agreed with Larys Strong that the White Worm had to be eliminated, and they believed the fire eliminated their enemy.
Why Mysaria (Probably) Isn’t Dead: Her Role In HOTD Future Explained
Warning: Possible SPOILERS for Future House of the Dragon EpisodesMysaria’s death by fire may be greatly exaggerated because the White Worm still has a major role to play after House of the Dragon episode 9. According to George R.R. Martin’s Fire and Blood, Mysaria is meant to work with Daemon Targaryen once more, and the White Worm will become Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen’s (Emma D’Arcy) master of whisperers. Mysaria also has a crucial part in the upcoming tragedy to befall Aegon’s sister-wife and the new Queen, Helaena Targaryen (Phia Saban).
Lucerys Velaryon (Elliott Grihault) is meant to die at the hands of Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) when the Dance of the Dragons begins, as revenge for losing his eye by Luke’s hand when they were children in House of the Dragon episode 7. To exact his revenge for Luke, Daemon relies on Mysaria to provide two assassins named Blood and Cheese to break into the Red Keep and kill Aegon’s eldest son, Prince Jaehaerys Targaryen. Mysaria continues as Daemon and Rhaenyra’s spymaster during their future occupation of King’s Landing. While it’s possible House of the Dragon could create a new character if Mysaria really did die in the fire, it’s more likely she survived and will continue to be the White Worm from the shadows.
Mysaria Vs. Larys Strong Could Be A Major HOTD Battle
Mysaria and Lord Larys Strong can be equated to House of the Dragon’s versions of Lord Varys (Conlith Hill) and Lord Petyr Baelish (Aiden Gillen) from Game of Thrones. But unlike Varys and Littlefinger, Mysaria and Larys don’t know each other and don’t have an antagonistically friendly relationship. Larys is obviously well-informed as well, but he may also rely on the White Worm’s network for information the way Otto Hightower does. Crucially, Larys the Clubfoot informed Queen Alicent (Olivia Cooke) about the vast reach of the White Worm’s network of spies, and how many of them work inside the Red Keep, including the Queen’s handmaiden, Talya (Alexis Raben).
In fact, this could be how Mysaria survived the fire Larys’ henchman set, if she was even in the building at all. It’s very possible the White Worm’s informants in the Red Keep got word to Mysaria about Larys and Otto’s plan to betray her. If Mysaria survived, it could also set up a fantastic conflict between Larys and the White Worm as the respective spymasters of the Greens and the Blacks. Further, Mysaria very likely becomes aware, if she isn’t already, of Larys’ unusual proclivities regarding Queen Alicent’s feet that she can use against the Clubfoot if they clash.
When And How Will Mysaria Die In House of the Dragon?
Warning: Possible SPOILERS for Future House of the Dragon Episodes
According to Fire and Blood, Mysaria is meant to survive towards the end of the Dance of the Dragons. The White Worm continues to serve Rhaenyra and Daemon – and even informs Rhaenyra about Daemon’s betrayals – while she rules as Queen of the Seven Kingdoms after her faction takes over King’s Landing. Inevitably, Rhaenyra is unable to hold King’s Landing for more than a few months, and she has to flee the capital and take refuge at Dragonstone. Mysaria is finally captured after the Greens retake King’s Landing, and it’s said that she dies while being whipped through the city. However, many aspects of Fire and Blood have been significantly altered by House of the Dragon and Mysaria could meet a different end if, indeed, she survived the fire in episode 9.
House of the Dragon airs Sundays @ 9pm ET on HBO and streams on HBO Max.
