The Assassin’s Creed games take place during important historical eras in civilizations around the world, from Ancient Greece to Revolutionary Russia. While the Assassin’s Creed franchise is not entirely historically accurate, the games immerse players in incredibly detailed reenactments of historical cities. Assassin’s Creed also introduces players to many of the famous artists, politicians, generals, and other famous historical figures of the time.
Throughout the centuries, a secret Assassin Brotherhood fights to promote freedom and individuality, while the Templar Order wants to restrain free will and impose their rule on all civilization. The Assassin’s Creed games focus on individual Assassins in their struggles to defeat the Templars.
In addition to twelve “main” releases for PC and consoles, the Assassin’s Creed series also features many spin-off games for handhelds and mobile devices. Here is every historical setting Assassin’s Creed has tackled so far, including the spin-offs.

Assassin’s Creed: Altaïr’s Chronicles Setting – The Holy Land

Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation Setting – America
Liberation is set in New Orleans towards the end of the French and Indian War, from 1765-1777. The game focuses on African-French Assassin Aveline de Grandpré, the Assassin’s Creed series’ first female protagonist, and her fight against the Templars who are trying to gain control of the city.
Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag Setting – Caribbean Ocean
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag follows notorious Welsh pirate Edward Kenway during the Golden Age of Piracy in the 18th century Caribbean. AC Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarök Setting – Mythical Norse World
Unlike past Assassin’s Creed game settings, AC Valhalla’s Dawn of Ragnarök takes place in a completely fantastical world. Watch the official trailer above to see just how different Dawn of Ragnarök’s setting is compared to past entries in the franchise.

Another upcoming titile is Assassin’s Creed Codename Jade, which is set in China and will be a “AAA RPG action-adventure game for mobile devices,” according to Ubisoft. Players will take on the mantle of Basim Ibn Ishaq as they embark on an adventure in Bagdhad, with the core plot set 20 years before Valhalla. Mirage will see the return of elements of the series foundations and some of the more beloved features from games such as Origins and Odyssey, with the return of the eagle mechanic. Assassin’s Creed Mirage will also be the first game in the franchise that will tell its story entirely in the world of the Assassin, meaning no future modern elements will be in this entry. Additionally, Mirage will be a core single-player experience with a reduced scope, focusing heavily on narrative and gameplay instead of a massive open world. Mirage is targeting a 2023 release window for PC and all last-gen and next-gen consoles.
