Though busy in the world of Marvel, Euphoria‘s Sydney Sweeney is gearing up for her next project to star in and executive produce a new Barbarella movie. Originally created by Jean-Claude Forest, the Barbarella comics centered on the titular character as she went on a variety of adventures through space, many of which resulted in her sleeping with the alien races she encountered. The original comics became very controversial with international audiences as it became the first adult comic book, though would later be relaunched at Dynamite Entertainment with a more wider-audience approach.
Just a few years after making her comic book debut, a Barbarella movie would be produced starring Jane Fonda in the titular role and following her on an adventure to stop the mad scientist, Durand Durand, from utilizing his humanity-killing weapon.Directed by Roger Vadim, the film underperformed at the box office and scored mixed reviews, though would go on to be considered a B-movie classic. While multiple attempts have been made at sequels and remakes over the years, the Barbarella property might get a second shot on screen.
Deadline has brought word that Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney has signed on to star in and executive produce a new Barbarella movie. Sources close to the project note that no writer or director are attached at the time of writing, but will reunite the star with Sony Pictures after Madame Web and The Registration. Sweeney later took to her Instagram to confirm the film’s development, sharing a poster of the previous film adaptation with a caption teasing her excitement for the project, which can be viewed above:
How Sydney Sweeney’s Barbarella Can Outdo The Cult Classic Movie
Though considered a cult classic for its time, an updated take on a Barbarella movie could largely improve upon the flaws of the original. Much of the criticism directed towards the original Jane Fonda movie stemmed from its bland story and flat writing, while its visual effects were largely well-received, both aspects of which can be improved upon with 55 years worth of hindsight for those involved to look back upon. Additionally, with Sweeney confirming her involvement as early as she is into its development, the new Barbarella movie has the benefit of having a passionate talent driving the charge to bring the character back to the screen.
One of the more divisive elements the new Barbarella movie will have to face is the erotic nature of the original comics, as well as the 1968 movie. Though the recent comics have moved away from the aesthetics of the originals, Sweeney did become popular for some with her work in Euphoria and The Voyeurs, both of which she bared all and the former of which she has defended as being part of her character, leaving the door open for Sweeney to find a happy medium between the more adult nature of the original and today’s generally modest approach to intimate sequences. While audiences await more details on the new film, they can revisit the original Barbarella movie streaming on Fubo and Showtime now.
