Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld reveals what he hopes to see in Deadpool 3 with the team-up between Ryan Reynolds’ hero and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. Based on Liefeld’s successful Marvel comics, 2016’s Deadpool introduces audiences to Reynolds’ Deadpool, a chatty, sarcastic, and exceedingly lethal anti-hero. After the success of Deadpool 2 in 2018, it was confirmed that Reynolds’ character would return for a third installment, which was later thrown into flux after Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox. With confirmation that the R-rated Deadpool 3 is still moving forward under Disney with Shawn Levy attached to direct, fans are now looking forward to the beloved mercenary’s introduction into the MCU.
Although many questions remain about how Reynolds’ hero will work within the more family-friendly MCU, Deadpool 3 writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have confirmed on multiple occasions that the upcoming film will stay true to the tone of the first two movies and that it will be R-rated. After months of speculation regarding the upcoming MCU movie, Reynolds finally treated fans to some concrete information about the film with a video posted to social media. In addition to announcing that Deadpool 3 will release on September 6, 2024, Reynold’s video confirmed, much to fans’ delight, that Jackman will reprise his role as Wolverine after seemingly saying goodbye to the character in 2017’s Logan.
In a new interview with Comicbook, Deadpool creator Liefeld reveals what he hopes to see from the team-up between Deadpool and Wolverine in Deadpool 3. Liefeld thinks fans might be in for a dynamic similar to the one between Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon or Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The creator then imagines a fun scenario between the two heroes as they put their healing abilities to the test by chopping limbs off of one another. Check out Liefeld’s full comment below:
“Bing Crosby/Bob Hope, Road pictures. I feel like that’s what we’re getting. Or maybe it’s more like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Sundance Kid was more serious and Butch Cassidy was more of a conniver. And maybe it’s more like Lethal Weapon, and it’s Danny Glover and Mel Gibson. But somewhere between those models that I just gave you. Bing and Bob; Butch and Sundance; Newman/Redford; Hugh and Ryan. It’s going to be a monster.
“Wouldn’t we just watch them drive across America? Wouldn’t we just watch them walk through a mall? They both have a healing factor. I can see a healing factor one-off. I can see a healing factor one-off where the two of them decapitate one another and regrow limbs. Or at the very least, Wolverine slices generous pieces of Deadpool off. You saw what they did today when they re-enacted the katanas. They’re giving us the memes. I was thinking, ‘How many times did they rehearse that? Did they get that in one take? Two takes?”
What Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine Return Could Mean For Deadpool 3
Jackman’s Wolverine may have died at the end of Logan, but the character’s return in Deadpool 3 presents a number of exciting possibilities. Reynolds revealed at the beginning of last year that the upcoming movie was originally conceived as a road trip story between Deadpool and Logan, which was supposedly scrapped after Disney acquired Fox. With Wolverine now confirmed to appear in the movie, it’s possible that a road trip element will remain, but Liefeld’s comment about the buddy cop dynamic between the two characters certainly seems like a real possibility.
Logan has always been more of a serious character throughout his time in the X-Men movies, which could be an interesting dynamic to contrast against Reynolds’ sillier hero. It’s unclear how prominently Jackman’s Wolverine will feature in the film, however, and how integral he will end up being to the overall plot. After Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness featured the return of Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, Jackman’s inclusion in Deadpool 3 raises a number of interesting questions about the role original X-Men characters can play in the MCU and whether they may be reprising these roles again in the future.
