Charlie Cox wants more action in Daredevil: Born Again, but at the same time wants to find a balance between under and overuse of CGI within the show.
Charlie Cox wants to see more CGI action sequences in the Disney+ show, Daredevil: Born Again. The show will serve as an expansion to Netflix’s Daredevil, which ran from 2015 to 2018 with star reviews from critics and fans. Daredevil: Born Again will stream on Disney+ in Spring 2024 and features the return of Cox as Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin. Updates on the cast and further plot details have yet to be released as the show is still far off, but many past cast members of Daredevil, including Karen Page’s Deborah Ann Woll, are hoping for a character return of their own.
In Daredevil, Cox plays Matt Murdock, the blind lawyer/crime-fighting hero Daredevil in the show, with his character using boxing and forms of martial arts to defeat villains. While Cox will be starring in Daredevil: Born Again, only speculations have been made about his role and the story. This new show could possibly be based on the comic book telling of “Daredevil: Born Again,” in which Karen Page sells Daredevil’s identity to Kingpin for drug money, which in turn leads to Kingpin destroying Matt Murdock’s life, and causing Murdock to reevaluate himself as a person and a hero. While the show will surely differ from the comic books, it is quite possible that it could still draw inspiration from it, which Cox has expressed his hopes for in the past. Based on its title and association with the comics alone, Daredevil: Born Again is set to give fans a grimmer look at one of their favorite MCU characters, though one star is eager to see a specific element expanded upon.
In a recent interview with GQ to discuss his appearance on She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Charlie Cox opened up about what he wanted to see from Daredevil: Born Again. Though noting he didn’t want to reflect on it too much to avoid creating headlines, the returning MCU actor did admit he would like to see more action sequences with CGI included “sparingly” to show off Daredevil’s athletic prowess. I’ve learned that these questions are a little tricky because the problem with them is that if I start detailing things I’d like to do, then very quickly, it becomes a news story. It potentially gets in the minds of not only the fans but also the creators and the writers. I really want to be careful not to muddy those waters because if it turns out to be a good idea, it can be a shame because it robs the fans of that moment of discovery. So forgive me for being a little bit vague in this area. I guess what I would say is: hopefully, on the Disney+ show, Born Again, we will be able to use—and I hope that we do it sparingly, I believe it should be used sparingly—but we’ll hopefully be able to use a tiny bit more CGI in the action sequences. Just to emphasize his gymnastic abilities that have been basically impossible to do.
How Daredevil’s Reboot Can Feature More Action
As more Marvel characters are getting their own Disney+ shows, there is an increase in CGI being used within the characters and action sequences, something that the original Daredevil television show largely lacked. Most recently with She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, a lot of the look of the show relied heavily on CGI, with Jennifer Walters’ transformation into She-Hulk being mostly CGI, which infamously divided audiences throughout its run. Daredevil: Born Again has the chance to learn from past MCU Disney+ shows and feature more well-done action sequences with the addition of CGI and, to Cox’s point, add to Daredevil’s abilities.
However, as Cox said, heavy CGI would not benefit Daredevil due to the action sequences not having as many fantastical elements as other MCU shows and films. Adding unnecessary CGI would only be a detriment to the quality of production and fuel internet memes about poorly done editing, most recently seen with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Regardless of the levels of CGI, the addition of more action to Daredevil: Born Again would greatly add to the show and give Cox a chance to show off more of Daredevil’s fighting skills and abilities.
