It’s one of his most iconic roles and often cited as his best work, however, although American Psycho‘s Patrick Bateman was a young and wealthy New York City investment banker, actor Christian Bale apparently was not being paid anywhere near similar to his on-screen counterpart.

In an interview with GQ, the 48-year-old actor recalled makeup artists laughing at him over their pay gap – and claimed he was being paid the legal minimum amount he could have on the film.

”They had paid me the absolute minimum they were legally allowed to pay me,” he claimed to the publication of the horror film, noting he was sharing a house with his father and sister that was about to be repossessed.

“So the first thing was: ‘Holy crap. I’ve got to get a bit of money,’ because I’ve got American Psycho done, but I remember one time sitting in the make-up trailer and the make-up artists were laughing at me because I was getting paid less than any of them.

“And so that was my motivation after that. It was just: ‘I got to get enough that the house doesn’t get repossessed.'”

American Psycho had a budget of $US7 million (approx. $11.2 million) and made $US34.3 million (approx. $54.7 million) in the box office.

Bale, however, got the last laugh years later, earning a reported total of $US54 million (approx. $86.2 million) for his role as Batman in The Dark Knight Trilogy.
