A new Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities trailer promises a dream – or nightmare – anthology for fans of the horror genre. Known as a master of horror, Academy Award-winning director Guillermo del Toro has helmed films such as Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy, Crimson Peak, Pacific Rim, and The Shape of Water. His new Netflix series Cabinet of Curiosities is a long time coming, as it was announced back in May 2018. The original horror anthology series will feature del Toro as a producer and co-showrunner, with episodes directed by esteemed horror creators including The Babadook‘s Jennifer Kent, Mandy‘s Panos Cosmatos, and Splice‘s Vincenzo Natali, among a few others.
Of the stories and episodes featured in the anthology, two were written by del Toro, who also published a book in 2013 called Cabinet of Curiosities, though the series is not a direct adaptation. That book and del Toro’s other works serve as certain inspiration for the series, with a previous Cabinet of Curiosities trailer’s monsters drawing clear parallels to the creatures in Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape of Water. Stories in the anthology were also based on stories by horror authors Michael Shea and Henry Kuttner, as well as two episodes based on short stories by H.P. Lovecraft. The impressive cast includes Andrew Lincoln, Ben Barnes, Rupert Grint, Sofia Boutella, Charlyne Yi, Eric Andre, and Crispin Glover, among many others, as well as del Toro introducing each episode as a host and narrator.
Now, Netflix releases a trailer for the highly anticipated anthology series, offering a taste of the series’ tone as well as detailed looks at the monsters and storylines that fans can expect. Titles for the eight episodes, which will be released over four nights starting October 25, are shown at the end. The titles further tease the cryptic horrors within the titular cabinet while also teasing the source material for the stories, including “Lot 36,” “Graveyard Rats,” “Pickman’s Model,” “Dreams In The Witch House,” and “The Murmuring.”
How Will del Toro’s Cabinet Of Curiosities Challenge Modern Horror Conventions?
The chilling trailer teases incredibly unique horror tales with del Toro’s signature spin. His ominous yet whimsical narration, reminiscent of Tales from the Crypt, will likely give fans some breathing room between the terrifying tales and feels perfectly in tune with the spooky season. Previously, del Toro has described Cabinet of Curiosities as “genre-defining,” saying that it is “meant to challenge traditional notions of horror.” Based on this trailer, the series will do so by delving into the artistry and intricacies of its horrific subjects, rather than maintaining the air of mystery or pure fear that many modern horror films rely on. With the high-budget for the anthology, the individual flair of each director, and del Toro’s commitment to creating “beautiful, practical creatures,” this anthology will deliver plenty of frights while also immersing viewers in the mythical worlds that del Toro is known for.
Though del Toro himself is not directing any episodes of Cabinet of Curiosities, it is certainly a passion project for him, which he describes as something he “always wanted to do.” His interest in each director taking ownership over their episodes shows his confidence in their visions, which are sure to be bone-chilling. Hopefully, Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities will be around for a long time to come, offering horror creators a chance to flex their talents and bring new terrors to life.
