Avengers: Endgame seems to have forgotten a major detail about Shuri’s costume – so why did they do it, and how will Wakanda Forever fix it?
While the MCU is known for meticulously maintaining continuity, Avengers: Endgame forgot one major Black Panther detail – and Black Panther Wakanda Forever is remembering to fix it. With the immense amount of characters and storylines that crossed over in Avengers: Endgame, it was inevitable that some of the MCU’s specific details would slip through the cracks, but the way that the film handles one of Black Panther‘s biggest characters simply makes no sense. However, teasers for Black Panther Wakanda Forever have already shown that it is fixing on of Avengers: Endgame‘s biggest problems: Shuri’s outfit during the final battle.
The final battle in Avengers: Endgame features nearly every MCU hero joining forces to take down Thanos and his army, with each character wearing their iconic superhero costumes. While most of the non-superhero characters are simply wearing some kind of battle armor, Shuri’s costume choice is particularly strange, as she is wearing the exact same clothes she was wearing in Black Panther‘s finale. Still armed with her two vibranium gauntlets, Shuri’s purple and brown Black Panther outfit returns for the final battle against Thanos – but it seems that Endgame forgot that these clothes were just one of the many regular outfits Shuri wears. This particular outfit offers no real strategic advantage, and any of the other clothes she wears in Black Panther would have made just as much sense. Early teasers for Black Panther Wakanda Forever already show Shuri wearing a variety of different outfits, making this strange choice even more apparent. However, Shuri’s Endgame outfit actually makes a lot of sense when considering her place in the MCU.
Why Shuri Wore Her Black Panther Outfit In Avengers: Endgame
Unlike most of the other Avengers, Shuri doesn’t really have an iconic superhero costume, with her vibranium gauntlets being the only thing essential to her action sequences. However, Shuri is just one of many characters that shows up in Endgame‘s climactic scene, so the choice to keep her in the same clothes she wore in Black Panther serves the purpose of helping the audience rather than maintaining continuity. While she could have been wearing anything, having Shuri look the same as she did in Black Panther‘s climax, giving the character a sense of aesthetic continuity and connecting her to her Black Panther counterpart in the minds of the audience.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Is Likely To Give Shuri A True Costume
A new Black Panther will be selected in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and while the new hero’s identity isn’t confirmed, it seems very likely that it will be Shuri. The new Black Panther costume has been shown off in the trailers, and the white markings on the suit’s mask are very reminiscent of Shuri’s face makeup in Black Panther. Although Shuri has typically worn regular clothes up until now, Black Panther Wakanda Forever will probably give her a true costume in the form of the Black Panther suit. While Avengers: Endgame may have highlighted Shuri’s costume problem, Black Panther Wakanda Forever finally seems to be fixing it.
