The short behind-the-scenes documentary about the making of Avengers: Age of Ultron reveals that the Avengers’ first fight with Ultron could have been very different – not as it currently is in Avengers Tower. The climactic fight of the first Avengers movie with the alien species the Chitauri takes place all across New York City. The Battle of New York causes a lot of damage to streets, cars, and buildings – including Stark Tower, which is then rebuilt and rebranded as Avengers Tower. In the second Avengers movie, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) creates an AI designed to help protect the world, Ultron. However, Ultron turns against the Avengers and attacks them for the first time inside the new tower.
In From the Inside Out: Making of Avengers – Age of Ultron, Executive Producer Jeremy Latchem says:
“We ended up realizing that we have this big Avengers tower set – we want Ultron to attack right here. Because instead of having him built here and then fly away and attack across town, it seemed more visceral to kind of have the attack happen right here in this big huge space – because if you build a set this big, and you don’t blow it up, you’re doing something wrong.”
Latchem revealed that the first affront from Ultron was almost very different, happening all around NYC instead of in the tower. Ultron’s attack happening inside Avengers Tower instead of around New York City is a small difference that changed the film – in most cases for the better.
How The Original Age of Ultron Plot Would’ve Changed The Film
When Avengers: Age of Ultron was released, the movie performed well financially. In terms of reviews and fan reactions, it was one of the worst received films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, despite criticisms about its merit as a film, Avengers: Age of Ultron succeeded in being a crucial part of the MCU as a whole. Now that Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame have been released, fans are starting to notice all the ways that Avengers: Age of Ultron sets up those movies – the Infinity Stones that are revealed and the visions that end up coming true. This revelation about Avengers Tower proves that Avengers: Age of Ultron didn’t just succeed as a prequel to later Avengers movies, but it succeeded as a sequel too. Many sequel movies fall into the same trap of falling into dull repetition in an attempt to repeat the previous film’s success. If Avengers: Age of Ultron had repeated an attack on New York City, the movie would have become just another poor sequel to a great first film. By doing something new and different with the fight scene, Avengers: Age of Ultron solidified itself as a successful sequel and opened the door to the possibility of later Avengers sequels too.
Age Of Ultron’s Avengers Tower Change Made The Movie Better
When Tony tries to convince Bruce Banner a.k.a. the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) to help him build Ultron, he says, “What if next time aliens roll up to the club, and they will, they couldn’t get past the bouncer?” Bruce responds, “The only people threatening the planet would be people.” This quote sets up an important element in the movie – Tony is so focused on large external threats that he misses the ones closest to home. This is what makes the fight at the tower so important for the movie. It is a visceral way of changing the Avengers’ – and the audiences’ – perspective about where the real threats are. The beginning of the movie has the Avengers chasing Hydra, already more domestic than the invasion of the alien Chitauri, but Ultron is Tony’s own creation – this threat is as domestic as it gets. Having Ultron attack the Avengers’ own home sets up the stakes of a threat that comes from within, which ultimately makes the movie work better.
Age Of Ultron’s Original Plan Would’ve Helped 1 Story (Despite Being Worse)
Despite being better overall, the choice to not have the first Ultron fight around New York City does harm one aspect of the Avengers: Age of Ultron story. There is a harsh irony within Avengers: Age of Ultron with the peacekeeping program Tony created bringing the opposite of peace. If Ultron – who was built specifically in response to a threat that attacked and harmed New York City – had attacked and harmed New York City, it would have made that irony even harsher. It would have been even more devastating for Tony if the exact thing he was trying to prevent – another Battle of New York – had happened because of his actions. If the first fight had happened this way, it would have better set up Tony’s motivations in Captain America: Civil War and would have more clearly justified the general public turning on the Avengers.
While both ideas for how Ultron’s first fight would go work in some ways, Avengers: Age of Ultron is a better movie because of the final decision. The fight inside Avengers Tower is a newer, more interesting choice. As Latchem points out, the set of Avengers Tower provides an outstanding setting for a fight scene. The first attack from Ultron ended up being visually visceral and beautiful as the brand new Avengers Tower is destroyed.
