Several Marvel projects have been delayed due to Blade’s difficult production, including Avengers: Secret Wars, the final film of the MCU’s Phase 6.
The release date for Avengers: Secret Wars has been pushed back, which will make the MCU’s Phase 6 much bigger than originally planned. Originally billed for release on November 7, 2025, Avengers: Secret Wars and a slew of other upcoming Marvel Studios projects have been delayed, with Avengers 6 now scheduled for release on May 1, 2026. The change comes hot on the heels of troubles in Blade’s production, with delays also striking Deadpool 3 and Fantastic Four, but it’s the new year-long gap between Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars that will expand the MCU even more.
In the original plan for Phase 6 that was revealed at San Diego Comic Con 2022, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars were set to be released within months of each other. Now, the climactic films of The Multiverse Saga are more reminiscent of their Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame predecessors with a year-long gap between them. This means that, instead of leaving two empty slots in the new Phase 6 slate between the films, more Marvel projects will need to be produced to fill the gap, so Phase 6 will become much larger than it was supposed to be.
Why The MCU Needs More Projects Between Kang Dynasty & Secret Wars
At Comic-Con, two empty slots were left in the release schedule for the MCU’s Phase 6, both set to release in Summer 2025, though neither had been titled. However, now there’s a much longer gap between The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars, Phase 6 will consist of even more projects and turn out to be the longest Phase in The Multiverse Saga. There were only two films released in the year-long gap between Infinity War and Endgame, but that was before Marvel had begun to produce long-form content for Disney+. In today’s MCU, it can be expected that a few more films and some limited series’ will be released during the space between the two Avengers films.
Which Potential MCU Projects Could Be In Phase 6’s Release Gap?
Many have already been speculating about what will fill the empty slots in Marvel Studios’ Phase 6. Since it can now be assumed that more dates will soon be added to the slate, there’s more opportunity for rumored projects to take their place in Phase 6, perhaps even introducing new heroes who will show up in Secret Wars. Some projects that viewers were surprised to see omitted from the reveals at 2022’s San Diego Comic Con and the D23 Expo include the untitled sequels to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Eternals. The ending of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness perfectly set up a third film featuring the Master of the Mystic Arts, and Spider-Man 4 has been confirmed by both Marvel and Sony, so it’s possible these films could be released before the end of Phase 6.
While Marvel Studios trademarks should always be taken with a pinch of salt, titles including Celestials: End of Time, Hercules: Rise of the Gods, and Midnight Sons could suggest potential future projects for the MCU. Avengers: Secret Wars is set to be a massive event in the history of the MCU, especially if it follows the Marvel Comics storyline by bringing together a multitude of characters from across the Marvel Multiverse. This means that the year-long gap between Phase 6’s Avengers films can mean nothing but good news for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
