Ant-Man 3 Kang Variant Details Tease Arrival Of MCU’s Conqueror

The version of Kang audiences will see in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is described as a warrior variant of the menacing Marvel villain.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania features a Kang version that’s a warrior variant of the menacing central villain. Previously appearing in the spinoff series Loki, actor Jonathan Majors was introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe during the show’s finale. Though not explicitly stated, it is heavily implied that Majors’ character in the finale is a variant of Kang The Conquerer and that his warning of a great threat to the multiverse surfacing will soon come to fruition on-screen.

With Thanos defeated by The Avengers in Avengers: Endgame, it is yet to be seen who will be the MCUs next recurring central threat, though comic readers and MCU enthusiasts are already assuming it will be Kang in one form or another. Despite Phase Four MCU entries like Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness expanding the world and lore of the MCU ever further, it is currently still lacking that singular big bad behind the scenes that brought everything to an explosive close in the franchise’s previous phases. With Kang comes one of Marvel’s most fearsome threats from the comics and perhaps that singular entity that will force all the core heroes back into combined action once again.

Speaking with Men’s Heath Magazine, strength and conditioning coach Jamie Sawyer (who worked with Majors during his Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania prep), shed more detail on the type of character this Kang variant is. The coach described the movie’s iteration of Kang as a warrior. Majors also discussed how Kang is different from other MCU villains. Check out their comments below:

Majors: “Killmonger, Thanos, and Kang are not related, and that’s good for the MCU. It adds diversity.”

Sawyer: “He is the warrior version of Kang, so there was a focus on what that warrior would look like who’s been around through the ages and has developed every type of combat skill. It was about making him look like an imposing figure.”

The Multiverse Means Kang Will Be Unlike Any Previous MCU Villain

This focus on training for performance over aesthetics certainly builds Kang up to be a genuine threat in his upcoming appearance, offering significant stakes against the heroes he’ll be facing. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania footage screened at conventions this summer teased Kang has killed Avengers before in his lifetime. If that’s anything to go by, Scott Lang is in for a tough struggle as he deals with Kang’s physical strength and combative prowess will be quickly realized by fans. It is also of importance that Majors notes Kang’s lack of connection to previous MCU villains, suggesting that he will be a completely fresh nemesis who represents an entirely different challenge to what has come before in the franchise. With the multiverse continuing to widen, as do the threats coming through to test its heroes.

With Kang comes a chance for the MCU to up the ante in Phase Four and introduce that central figure who forces the best out of the core selection of fan favorite heroes. While Thanos was obviously a dangerous on-screen foe for the Avengers, in his wake it could be argued the current heroes have faced relatively lighter stakes than in the franchise’s past. Through the introduction in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania this warrior variant of Kang may be the unstoppable force that provides a real sense of sacrifice and loss to the current roster of heroes. Evidently, through Majors’ training and the hints towards this version of Kang having been involved in wars and conflict across countless ages and worlds, the MCU is building a villain who will not be easily displaced. For any Marvel fan missing that sense of genuine concern and unease about the safety of their favorite heroes, Kang’s introduction will likely be an exciting and nerve wracking one alike.
