Amsterdam is one of the most exciting movies coming out this October and a welcoming breather among so many horror movies that make up the Halloween season.
The movie is packed with notable Hollywood stars and even famous pop singers, typical of a David O. Russel movie. Amsterdam follows three clumsy friends who witness a murder and end up being framed for it, only to uncover an unbelievable conspiracy. Much of its cast will be recognizable to moviegoers from their past work.
Taylor Swift – Cats (2019)
Amsterdam isn’t the first time Taylor Swift joins the cast of a big movie, but most fans like to pretend her appearance in Cats never happened. Not because she underperformed, of course — after all, performing is what Swift does best — but because the movie ended up being a complete disaster among both critics and audiences.
The film, inspired by a sung-through musical, offered some horrifying CGI and many musical numbers that lacked any energy whatsoever, following a tribe of cats deciding which one of them will ascend to a life of prestige. Some Taylor Swift fans try hard to defend the film, but things will probably get easier with her role as Liz Meekins in Amsterdam.
Chris Rock – Spiral (2021)
After the massive Oscar controversy, Chris Rock makes a promising appearance in Amsterdam as Milton King, not so long after having played the lead role in the 2021 horror film Spiral, an extension of the popular Saw franchise. Both roles are involved in a murder mystery. Maybe that’s Rock’s latest tendency.
While Rock is back with a comical performance in Amsterdam, even though it also counts on hints of drama, it was great to see him as the lead in a straight-up horror film, offering his fans something they had never seen before.
Andrea Riseborough – Possessor (2020)
Andrea Riseborough recently starred in the ultraviolent Possessor, an interesting hidden gem directed by Brandon Cronenberg, David Cronenberg’s son, that mixes body horror with original sci-fi elements.
Riseborough, who plays the Dutch Beatrice Vandenheuvel in Amsterdam, took the role of a cold-hearted corporate assassin in Possessor; she uses brain-implant technology to take control of other people’s bodies to eliminate her targets. Certainly, an impactful watch that requires a dose of Amsterdam‘s vibrant quirkiness right after in order to make viewers forget some ghastly scenes Possessor has to offer.
Alessandro Nivola – The Many Saints Of Newark (202)
Alessandro Nivola plays Detective Hiltz in Amsterdam, a huge contrast with his latest role in the violent The Many Saints of Newark, where he played the mob boss Dickie Moltisanti; a key posthumous character in The Sopranos universe.
The film takes place in 1967 back when Tony Soprano was still just a teenage boy, exposing the influence his uncle Dickie had on his family and personality, reflecting on the mob boss he would become later on, for better or for worse.
Anya Taylor-Joy – The Northman (2022)
The Northman is one of the most divisive movies of 2022: some people were expecting an action-filled Viking epic and were left disappointed. On the other hand, some fans were left bewildered by the hallucinatory, prophetical journey of Amleth in search of revenge for his family.
Anya Taylor-Joy is a huge stand-out in the film as Amleth’s love interest; her character is a sharp-witted muse that represents a spark of hope in the life of the Viking warrior. 2022 is a great year for Taylor-Joy; apart from playing Libby Voze in Amsterdam, she will also star in the upcoming horror comedy The Menu.
Rami Malek – No Time To Die (2021)
Rami Malek is on his way to becoming one of the most prominent Hollywood actors out there, winning a best actor Oscar after playing the iconic Freddie Mercury and recently playing a James Bond villain in the latest film of the hero, which was Daniel Craig’s farewell to the character. Malek is Lyutsifer Safin, a ruthless terrorist leader and a competent scientist with cruel intentions.
Malek showed once again how versatile of an actor he is, entering the history of cinema as one of the scariest 007 villains to this day, a role somewhat similar to the tormented Mr. Robot protagonist he used to play.
Robert DeNiro – The Irishman (2019)
Robert DeNiro fell a little under the radar ever since his busy 2019, when he starred in two huge productions: Joker and The Irishman, two movies that showed up at 2020’s Oscars. DeNiro then participated in two lighthearted movies between The Irishman and Amsterdam: The War With Grandpa and The Comeback Trail, but his role in the latest Scorsese film remains an iconic comeback to his cinema roots.
DeNiro worked in a great Scorsese streak of gangster movies and is already confirmed in the legendary director’s next movie, Killers Of The Flower Moon, currently in its post-production phase.
John David Washington – Malcolm & Marie (2021)
John David Washington is quickly finding his way in the film industry with a streak of exciting movies ever since 2017, eventually winning over audiences with his thrilling performance as the protagonist in Christopher Nolan’s conspiratorial sci-fi Tenet. In Amsterdam, Washington is Harold Woodman, one of the three protagonists of the film.
His most impressive performance yet is arguably Malcolm in Malcolm & Marie; the movie is an intimate look into a couple in crisis dealing with a romantic reckoning. One of the most divisive movies of 2021, the film takes place entirely in the same location and counts solely on two performances: Washington and Zendaya.
Margot Robbie – The Suicide Squad (2021)
Another actress having a promising year is Margot Robbie, starring in two of the biggest production 2022 has to offer: Amsterdam, of course, where she plays the nurse Valerie Voze, and Babylon, the new Damien Chazelle movie coming out later in the year and generating a certain buzz around Robbie’s potential in a best actress race at next year’s Oscars.
Margot Robbie knows a lot about range, offering several engaging roles in the past years that compel any audience; from the iconic Harley Quinn, whom she played in both Suicide Squad movies, to her heart-rendering performance as Sharon Tate in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.
Christian Bale – Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Christian Bale is one of the most active actors in Hollywood nowadays, always appearing in at least one great project every year, except for the pandemic period. Playing Burt Berendsen in Amsterdam, fans can expect one of the funniest and most awkward performances by Bale, which guarantees a fun time in theaters.
Also in 2022, Bale played the role of the main antagonist in MCU’s Thor: Love and Thunder; Gorr, a vengeful force of destruction aiming at taking down any god who crosses his path, making him one of the best villains of the year so far.
