Amazon Echo Show 15 Will Get An Update That Turns It Into A Smart TV

[ad_1]

The Echo Show 15 is Amazon’s biggest smart display, and a new update coming in the future is about to put its massive screen to good use. Amazon’s smart displays are sold under the Echo Show line and come in various sizes. There’s the Echo Show 5, which has a 5.5-inch display, the Echo Show 8 with an eight-inch screen, and the Echo Show 10 with a 10.1-inch display. The Echo Show 15 towers above them all with its 15.6-inch screen.

One of the Echo Shows’ biggest rivals is Google’s Nest Hub smart displays. However, Google only offers the Nest Hub in two sizes. There is the Nest Hub (2nd gen) with a seven-inch display and the Nest Hub Max with a 10-inch display. Reports show the upcoming Pixel Tablet will double as a smart display when docked. Apple is expected to enter the smart display segment with a new HomePod with a screen, a camera for FaceTime, and Apple TV. However, it is not likely to launch until 2023 at the earliest.

At its fall event, Amazon announced that a new update would be coming to the Echo Show 15 that practically turns it into a smart TV. The free update will bring Fire TV to the smart display, allowing it to work just like a smart TV running Fire TV. This is a major update that should transform how the device is used. The Echo Show 15 can already stream shows and movies from Prime Video, Netflix, Hulu and Sling, and the experience is reported to be great thanks to the screen having a 1080p resolution and being pretty bright. However, this update will bring the Fire TV experience with features such as multiple profile support.

The Echo Show 15 Will Work With The Alexa Voice Remote

Amazon says that the update will come to all Echo Show 15 users across the globe. However, those in the U.S. can watch movies and shows from streaming services such as Paramount+ and Showtime, a first for Echo Show. Finding what to watch will be pretty easy as users can simply ask Alexa to play a show. They can also access shortcuts to streaming apps, personal watchlists, and recently watched content from a new Fire TV widget on the home screen. In addition to voice and touch controls, the update will also support the Alexa Voice Remote (3rd generation).

Additional features coming to the Echo Show 15 include the ability to view multiple live feeds. Amazon has revealed that users can view up to four compatible smart home cameras simultaneously on the Echo Show 15, Echo Show 10, and Echo Show 8, while the Echo Show 5 will be able to show two feeds. The Echo Show 15 (and 4th gen Echo) will also be able to function as a hub and “provide extended functionality” for older Echo devices on the same network.

For example, an Echo Dot can connect to the Echo Show 15 and perform functions such as reducing the volume, controlling lights, and getting the date and time without connecting to the internet. It is unknown if these other features will be bundled with the Fire TV update or if it will be a separate one. However, Amazon says all the new features announced for Echo devices will be rolling out in the coming months.
