Adrien Brody, who portrayed Luca Changretta in Peaky Blinders season 4, reveals that he desperately tried to remain a part of the crime series.

Adrien Brody opens up about desperately trying to remain a part of the Peaky Blinders cast. Introduced in the premiere of Peaky Blinders season 4, Brody’s Luca Changretta is the main antagonist throughout the remaining episodes — a mobster from New York with a score to settle against the show’s titular group. Portrayed as he was by the Oscar-winning Brody, Luca was a formidable threat and the actor was praised for a scene-stealing performance that helped Peaky Blinders reach new heights.

Although the BBC series generally puts the spotlight on Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy), Peaky Blinders was kept fresh thanks to an expansive roster of recurring and guest performers that each brought a reliable flair and commitment to their portrayals. That’s certainly true of Brody, as Luca was written specifically with him in mind. The actor has called Peaky Blinders a dream role, reflecting on the fact that it was the sort of character he’d always wanted to play.

In an interview with EW, to discuss his previous work and promote the movie Blonde, Brody opens up about the degree to which he did not want to leave Peaky Blinders after season 4. Although he’s ultimately shot and killed by Arthur Shelby (Paul Anderson), Brody admits that he wanted to remain a part of the crime show and even tried to talk the writers into finding a way to bring Luca back to life. The actor mentions this while also discussing what made Luca such a special character. See what he had to say below:

It had room for all of this fun stuff to honor a style in filmmaking and acting that I loved, and a style and character and lore within the foundations of family, mafia, honor and all these things. I desperately tried to persuade them to find a way to keep Luca alive to come back for revenge. I really wanted to stay. I did not want to go home.

Peaky Blinders Had A Number Of Memorable Guest StarsAlfie looking slightly surprised in Peaky Blinders

Brody wasn’t the only famous face to pass through Peaky Blinders. By the time it had ended earlier this year, the series included appearances by the likes of Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit), Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones), Kingsley Ben-Adir (One Night in Miami…), and Tom Hardy (Venom). They each complimented the series, bringing a lot to the seedy world of gangsters and keeping the series fresh with new characters. In a sense, it becomes something of a necessity to bring in the kind of heavy hitters that can add some color to the rival factions and liven up ongoing feuds.

Those impressive turns are likely why there’s still a lot of curiosity surrounding a potential Peaky Blinders movie, which recently received a positive update from series creator Steven Knight. Perhaps, when it moves forward, there will be a chance to bring Brody back for a flashback or dream sequence. Based on everything the actor has said, he’d certainly be open to reprising Luca.
