The House Of The Dragon has captivated audiences since its first episode. However, much of its fame is based on the popularity of the original series, Game Of Thrones.
There are a lot of differences between the two series, including the main noble houses represented. However, there are also many similarities between the two series, with the new series including aspects that pay homage to the original series. These memes compare several aspects of House Of The Dragon and Game Of Thrones in humorous ways.
10/10 The Song
One unpopular opinion about House Of The Dragon is that the showrunners should have created a new theme song instead of using the same introduction soundtrack from Game Of Thrones. While some people loved the nostalgia of hearing the original song, some fans wanted something unique to the new show.
This meme represents the portion of the fanbase that wanted something new for the series. Though this was likely a thoughtful decision on the part of the showrunners, some fans believe it was a thoughtless thing to do.
9/10 The Scripts
Though House of the Dragon has been darker compared to Game Of Thrones, many fans are already convinced it’s a far superior series compared to the original. Many fans believe this has to do with the writers working on the new series.
This meme emphasizes how fans feel about the first several episodes of this series compared to the last few seasons of the original. While it’s arguable that the last few seasons of GoT were subpar, fans are more impressed with this new storyline.
8/10 Viserys As The New Ned
Viserys is similar to his Fire & Blood counterpart, but he’s also been compared to Ned Stark. The reason for this comparison is both men’s compassionate nature and the desire for a peaceful nation.
This meme sums up many fans’ opinions of this comparison. Though Viserys isn’t a particularly disliked character, these fans believe he isn’t as lovable as Ned Stark. While Viserys’ role as king forced him to make some difficult decisions, Ned’s role as Hand of the King made him determined to be an honest advisor and protector.
7/10 Battle Of The Boars
There are some aspects in the new series that are paying homage to the original series. One of the most notable connections is when Rhaenyra and Ser Criston are attacked by a wild boar, which is the same beast that killed Robert Baratheon.
This meme humorously reminds fans of the connection between the series. In GoT, though King Robert was on a royal hunt with likely many armed men, he was taken down by a boar. In HoTD, however, Ser Criston and Rhaenyra have little difficulty taking down the wild beast.
6/10 The Prince That Was Promised
In House Of The Dragon, Viserys told Rhaenyra about the Song of Ice and Fire, and the legend carried on throughout the Targaryen monarchs. This secret is about the impending Long Night and the prince that would save their world.
As this meme references, this legend becomes reality in Game of Thrones when the white walkers invade the North, determined to destroy the world. Though it’s suggested that Jon Snow is the Prince That Was Promised, fans were annoyed that he was too dedicated to Daenerys to make many decisions, and it’s actually Arya Stark that defeats the Night King.
5/10 Relationships Within The Family
Though Cersei is one of the most powerful Queen Mothers in Westeros history, she was not a popular character. One of the most uncomfortable aspects of her character was her long-time affair with her twin brother Jaime.
Though incest is an uncomfortable topic between the two series, more fans are content with the relationship between Rhaenyra and Daemon Targaryen than they were with the relationship between the Lannister twins, as expressed in this meme.
4/10 A Trickster From Each Series
Both Otto Hightower and Larys Strong have been compared to GoT’s Petyr Baelish (also known as Little Finger). However, as the series has progressed, it has become more clear that Larys has more in common with Little Finger.
This meme points out the obvious similarities between the two characters. Both of them are extremely conniving people, interested in doing what it takes to further themselves. Considering Baelish’s sneaky nature led to his violent death, this makes fans wonder what Larys’ future will entail.
3/10 Betrayal From Each Series
There are many comparisons between the two series, especially when it comes to the controversial characters. In the original series, Shae was in a serious relationship with Tyrion though she was working for his father the whole time. On the other hand, Ser Criston was having an affair with Rhaenyra until she rejects him.
While these characters aren’t as similar as Baelish and Strong, there are still some similarities between the two, as this meme points out. Both of them acted as though they loved one of the main characters, but then proved they were more concerned with their own interests.
2/10 Different Types Of Mothering
In both series, there are many bastards within the noble families that aren’t legitimate members of the house by blood but are still important main characters. This meme compares the way in which stepparents treat their spouse’s children.
In Game Of Thrones, fans were critical of the fact that Catelyn treated Jon Snow so badly as if he was responsible for his father’s (supposed) actions. In comparison, Laenor Velaryon is aware that Rhaenyra’s three sons are not his biological children but treats them no differently than if they were.
1/10 Representation Of Targaryens
This meme emphasizes the representation of the Targaryen house in both shows. While the Targaryens are a strong house with many members in HOTD, the original series featured only two living members of the once powerful family.
This is the biggest difference between the two series. By the end of the original series, Jon Snow is the only living person with Targaryen blood. However, the new series focuses on this powerful house, with many powerful houses from GOT, like the Lannisters and Baratheons, being more minor characters.
