Matt Murdock, also known as the vigilante superhero Daredevil, is finally getting his just due in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Charlie Cox reprising his iconic role first in Spider-Man: No Way Home and again in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, all in anticipation for his upcoming Disney+ series, Daredevil: Born Again.
With Daredevil officially joining the larger MCU, he faces the possibility of meeting the franchise’s best heroes–and worst villains. While he would certainly destroy many of the MCU’s best villains in a one-on-one fight, there are certain others that would no doubt defeat the Man Without Fear.
Ghost
Hannah John-Kamen’s Ava Starr, a.k.a. the Ghost, made her first appearance in Ant-Man and the Wasp, where she challenged the eponymous heroes with her ability to become intangible. While she cannot always control this power, Ghost poses a great threat to her enemies, which is likely why she has been recruited for the Thunderbolts.
Though Matt Murdock is almost certainly more skilled in combat than Ava Starr, the villain possesses an important ability against this specific foe. Given that Daredevil relies on his ability to sense his opponent, Ghost’s power to virtually disappear from existence would make it difficult for the vigilante hero to sense her presence. Unable to hear her movements, Daredevil would run the serious risk of being defeated should he choose to challenge the Ghost.
Hela
2017’s Thor: Ragnarok introduces audiences to Cate Blanchett’s Hela, the firstborn daughter of Odin and the goddess of death. Deriving her incredible power from Asgard, Hela grows more powerful from her proximity to the home of the Norse gods, only being defeated when Asgard itself fell to the might of Surtur.
In all her eons of existence, Hela has only ever been beaten by two beings: Odin and Surtur. Even Thor proved unable to defeat his sister without relying on Surtur’s strength to finish the job. Daredevil, in that case, would pose very little threat to the goddess of death, who is virtually unstoppable so long as she can rely on the power of Asgard.
The Mandarin
Tony Leung’s Xu Wenwu, sometimes referred to as the Mandarin, is one of the MCU’s best villains, who makes his sole appearance in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Using the titular ten rings to build a massive criminal empire, Wenwu has lived for thousands of years and has very few equals in hand-to-hand combat.
Though the Mandarin and Daredevil both rely on martial arts prowess to fight their respective enemies, the former is clearly more powerful thanks to the might of the Ten Rings. Even Shang-Chi himself wouldn’t have stood a chance against his father without using the Rings to defeat him. While Daredevil might have bested Wenwu man-to-man, he would have fallen quickly had he faced the strength of all ten Rings.
Abomination
Over a decade after his debut in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, Tim Roth has returned as Emil Blonsky, a.k.a. the Abomination, appearing in Shang-Chi and several episodes of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Possessing many of the same powers as the Hulk, the Abomination is a rampaging monster that should not be underestimated in a fight.
Just as Daredevil would struggle in a fight against the Hulk, a battle against Abomination would prove quite difficult for the Man Without Fear to emerge victorious. While not impossible, Daredevil would stand a very slim chance of besting the Abomination, even after his supposed redemption.
Yon-Rogg
Jude Law appears in 2019’s Captain Marvel as the Kree warrior Yon-Rogg, who trains and befriends Carol Danvers after kidnapping her from Earth and wiping her memory. He possesses super-strength and stamina, as well as many of the same powers as Captain Marvel herself, albeit to a lesser degree.
Yon-Rogg, like other Kree soldiers, is far more powerful than the average human. While Daredevil himself is anything but an average human, it would be difficult for him to stand against the might of a Kree soldier. His abilities are far better suited to taking out street-level villains than the cosmic might of a warrior like Yon-Rogg.
Ulysses Klaue
Andy Serkis’s Ulysses Klaue is a conniving arms dealer who appeared in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Black Panther. After losing his hand in his first appearance, Klaue adopted a cybernetic replacement that possessed several abilities and gimmicks that gave him an edge in combat.
While Klaue is far from the most dangerous villain in the MCU, his synthetic hand does possess an ability that would prove helpful against Daredevil specifically. With the power to emit sonic blasts, Klaue could easily disorient Matt Murdock, who depends on his hearing to fight. After disorienting the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, it wouldn’t be long before Klaue had incapacitated his enemy as well.
Ultron
Ultron is the AI-enhanced android that torments the Avengers during the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron. Believing humanity to be the Earth’s biggest threat, Ultron attempts to wipe humankind out with an asteroid but is foiled by Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Like many of the Avengers who faced Ultron, Daredevil’s abilities are not suited to taking on an enemy made of metal. Murdock’s blows would do little to quell the genocidal android, who could merely transfer his consciousness into one of his sentries should his original body be ripped apart.
Gorr The God Butcher
Gorr the God Butcher is undoubtedly one of Christian Bale’s best roles in recent years. Appearing in Thor: Love and Thunder, Gorr embarks on a crusade to slaughter every god from every pantheon after his prayers to save his daughter’s life go unanswered. Carrying the powerful Necrosword, Gorr has the rare ability to actually kill deities, making him a major threat.
Though Gorr was himself not the most skilled fighter, the power he derived from the Necrosword made up for any deficits in his abilities. Given that he was able to stand against the god of thunder himself while wielding the cursed blade, there would be little that Daredevil could do to stop the god butcher from continuing his conquest.
The Scarlet Witch
Wanda Maximoff, otherwise known as the Scarlet Witch, is one of the most powerful villains in the MCU. Portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen, the Scarlet Witch possesses stronger magical abilities than anyone else on the planet, even easily defeating Doctor Strange and the sorcerers of Kamar-Taj. When enhanced by the Darkhold, the Maximoff proved to be nearly unbeatable.
If the combined strength of the Sorcerers Supreme, the skill of Doctor Strange, and the Illuminati of Earth-838 were each unable to defeat the Scarlet Witch in combat, Daredevil wouldn’t stand a chance. His ability to fight would prove unhelpful in a skirmish with the former Avenger, who rarely let a single enemy lay hands on her during her villainous rampage.
Thanos
The Mad Titan Thanos is the ultimate villain of the Infinity Saga, who battles against the Avengers during the events of Infinity War and Endgame. Gathering the six Infinity Stones into one Gauntlet, Thanos becomes one of the most powerful beings to ever exist, wiping out half of all life in the universe with a snap of his fingers.
As skilled as Daredevil is in hand-to-hand combat, he would likely be unable to even approach the fully-powered Thanos. Not even the Avengers were able to stop the Mad Titan when he had the full might of the completed Infinity Gauntlet at his disposal. While Daredevil could certainly prove useful in picking off some of Thanos’s minions, he would be little help against the villain himself.
