10 Horror Movies To Watch Before Halloween Ends

The official Halloween Ends Twitter account recently shared a brief teaser for the upcoming film and wrote, “Laurie Strode. Michael Myers. Only one of them will survive.” Horror fans have been waiting to see how Laurie will finally conquer the villain who has been chasing and tormenting her for several decades, as it doesn’t seem like another ending is possible.

Before checking out the third Halloween movie directed by David Gordon Green on October 14th, fans can check out other similar films featuring equally terrifying villains, an October setting, or a creepy tone.

Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark (2019)

Stream on Netflix

Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark is a good pick for fans of the Halloween franchise as the film opens on Halloween evening in 1968. A group of friends tease another character and then end up at a haunted house. The friends realize that horrifying figures from a book of horror tales are coming to life and a great danger to them.

The Pale Lady from Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark is one of the most visually arresting parts of the movie, which feels more unique than other films since it’s about a book becoming real. The movie is about how reality can be worse than someone’s biggest imagination.

Trick ‘r Treat (2009)

Stream on Kanopy

For horror fans who are in the mood for a Halloween-themed pick, Trick ‘r Treat is always a fun anthology to watch. The setting of Warren Valley, Ohio has a lot in common with Halloween‘s Haddonfield, Illinois as both places feature murder and threats that make it impossible to enjoy October 31st.

The villain who appears throughout all of the linked stories, Sam, has a burlap sack over his head and seems to be an innocent trick-or-treater until audiences realize his evil designs. The legend of the Halloween School Bus Massacre will remind fans of the story of Michael Myers that every Haddonfield resident has heard.

A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984)

Stream on HBO Max

When looking for another classic slasher, A Nightmare On Elm Street is a great idea, as it has a famous villain, a wise final girl, and the same eerie yet fun tone as Halloween. Like Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger goes after a group of teenagers in a small town, and Freddy sticks out because he murders people when they’re fast asleep.

A Nightmare On Elm Street and the new Halloween trilogy can be rewatched several times as horror fans are always in the mood to revisit these beloved characters. Nancy Thompson feels a sense of duty and responsibility to save her friends and learn the truth about Freddy, and she’s as perceptive as Laurie.

X (2022)

Rent on AppleTV

X impressed horror audiences earlier in 2022 with a perfectly told story of filmmakers making an adult movie and getting murdered on a Texas farm. It’s a slasher with some genuinely different elements: an elderly couple who kills people, an overall theme about getting older, and a final girl named Maxine who dreams of being famous.

Audiences appreciate the horror tropes in X and the detailed filmmaking style, which proves that nowhere at this location is safe and the characters were doomed before they even arrived and began setting up their movie. X is perfect for Halloween Ends fans as it feels both old-fashioned and new.

Child’s Play (1988)

Stream on Fubo and AMC+

Horror fans feel nostalgic toward Laurie and Michael’s many confrontations and also about the terrible doll Chucky from the Child’s Play franchise. Chucky talks a lot and laughs all the time at his own jokes, and it’s definitely scary watching young Andy Barclay play with the doll and then figure out that he’s capable of killing people.

The tone of the Child’s Play franchise is campy and there are many moments in Halloween (2018) and Halloween Kills that feel as humourous as they do terrifying.

Prom Night (1980)

Stream on Peacock and Shudder

After starring in Halloween, Jamie Lee Curtis played Kim Hammond, a teenage girl whose sister Robin died in a tragic manner, in the slasher Prom Night. Now, it’s years later and someone is going after high schoolers, and the big high school dance provides the perfect dramatic backdrop for everything.

Kim might not be a popular final girl like Laurie Strode, but she does have Laurie’s strength and belief that she can figure out who is behind the murders. Prom Night isn’t talked about as much as other slasher films from the same decade, but it feels nostalgic to watch it.

Fear Street: Part Two – 1978 (2021)

Stream on Netflix

Fear Street: Part Two – 1978 is one of the best Netflix horror movies and is perfect for fans of Halloween and other classic slashers who want to go back in time. Set at Camp Nightwing in the late ’70s, the movie sheds light on Ziggy and Cindy Berman’s sibling relationship and the horrible ordeal that they go through when a killer shows up one summer.

The second film in the trilogy is a fun throwback to the ’70s and yet has universal and relatable themes of family and fitting in as the sisters are trying to grow up and be independent while navigating their sometimes complicated and tense bond. It’s also a great movie for those who love slashers that are a bit cheesy.

Haunt (2019)

Stream on AMC+ and Shudder

Haunt is about a twisted and sinister haunted house and it’s possible to picture Michael Myers here, as the movie’s entire run time happens on Halloween night. In the 2019 film, Harper realizes too late that she and her pals should never have entered this incredibly creepy building, and she does what she can to make it through.

Like Laurie, Harper is an intelligent character who senses danger right away, even when her friends might think that she’s worrying too much. Laurie has a lot of pain from that Halloween night in 1978 and Harper grew up in a terrible household, so both characters are haunted in different ways.

Friday The 13th (1980)

Rent on AppleTV

From Jason Voorhee’s well-known hockey mask to the fact that he doesn’t speak, it’s tough to talk about the famous Friday The 13th villain without comparing him to Michael Myers. Before checking out Halloween Ends, it would be fun to revisit the 1980 slasher film about havoc breaking loose at Camp Crystal Lake.

Jason and Michael often go together as they’re brutal killers who seem tough to win against. Nostalgia is a major factor watching the new Halloween trilogy and so it’s enjoyable to watch Friday The 13th again and remember the terror of being a camper or counselor at this location.

Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)

Not available to stream yet

While some of the most popular slashers are from the ’80s and ’90s, there have been some recent fascinating releases that have intrigued fans, including A24’s Bodies Bodies Bodies.

The Halloween franchise has always focused on teenage characters, from Laurie and her babysitter friends in the original 1978 movie to Laurie’s granddaughter Alyson Nelson in the new trilogy. Bodies Bodies Bodies is about a group of young adult friends who go away for the weekend and have to solve a mystery when someone is killed. It’s possible to picture both Laurie and Alyson with this group, figuring out the truth.
