The first trailer for Damien Chazelle’s new project, Babylon, recently dropped and one of the first things that fans noticed was the stellar cast. From La La Land to 10 Cloverfield Lane, Damien Chazelle has, time and again, proved his mastery of working with different genres and amazing actors. But the teaser suggests that Babylon is going to be completely different from any of his past works.
Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, and Tobey Maguire are just some of the names attached to the project who join the long list of great actors who have previously worked with the lauded director.
Brad Pitt: Babylon (25th Dec 2022)
When it was announced that Brad Pitt would be starring in Babylon, other than fan excitement, there were a lot of questions regarding what his role would be. The movie will be taking place in 1920s Hollywood.
Although the extent of his role has not been confirmed yet, Brad Pitt is going to be playing Jack Conrad, a producer, and director during the transition of films to talkies during the 1920s. This won’t be the first time Brad Pitt has taken on a role of someone in old-school Hollywood, as he played Cliff Booth in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.
Miles Teller: Whiplash (2014)
Whiplash was the sleeper hit of 2014 and is inarguably one of Miles Teller’s best movies. Audiences were enthralled by the brilliant performance of Miles Teller who played the character of Andrew and did a brilliant job of showcasing what obsession with achieving greatness can do to a person, psychologically and physically.
Teller also added an extra layer of authenticity with his knack for drumming and some of the most memorable scenes in the movie involved Miles suffering because of exhaustion and callouses during his practices.
J.K. Simmons: Whiplash (2014)
Whiplash is a must-watch for jazz fans and, in it, J.K. Simmons played one of the most terrifying teachers in the history of cinema. His performance made even the audience squirm with terror. Simmons played Terence Fletcher, the mentor and instructor at a musical conservatory known for his unconventional training methods.
The chemistry between Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons, along with the tight direction from Chazelle, delivered a classic for the ages. His performance here added another layer of excitement when it was announced that he would be playing Commissioner Gordon in Justice League. He will reprise the role in the upcoming Batgirl.
Emma Stone: La La Land (2016)
La La Land was an astounding success for Damien Chazelle and its cast members. The movie won six Academy Awards including The Best Director for the year. In it, Emma Stone played the character of Mia, an aspiring actress.
Emma Stone’s incredible performance also won her the Best Actress Academy Award. It added life to the romantic musical and made the audience connect to the overall story. This wasn’t surprising at all considering her past work in projects such as Birdman.
Ryan Gosling: La La Land (2016)
Ryan Gosling has been dazzling fans with incredible performances throughout his acting career, from playing Neil Armstrong in First Man to his subdued performance in Blade Runner 2049. In La La Land, Gosling played the character of Sebastian, an ambitious pianist who falls in love with Mia.
Ryan added a touch of boyish charm to his role, which made the character of Sebastian a charming yet ambitious figure. His chemistry with Emma Stone was a major force behind the success of the movie and this is definitely one of Ryan Gosling’s most iconic roles.
John Goodman: 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)
Not a lot of fans were expecting 10 Cloverfield Lane to be as good as it was. In it, John Goodman played the terrifying yet mysterious character names, Howard.
His acting was largely behind the thrilling suspense of the entire movie, adding another credit to his long list of amazing performances. Chazelle’s direction, along with Goodman’s performance, added a terrifying sense of restlessness to a major part of the movie. The intensity of his performance can also be compared to that of J.K. Simmons in Whiplash.
Margot Robbie: Babylon (25th Dec 2022)
While not a lot is known about Margot Robbie’s role in Chazelle’e next project, the first trailer showed the audience a glimpse of what they can expect. She is playing the character of Nellie LaRoy, an aspiring young actress who comes to Hollywood during the 1920s to live out her dream.
Fans will have to wait for the movie to come out to see whether Margot Robbie stands up to her usual best or not. But if her track record is anything to go by, which includes projects such as The Wolf Of Wall Street and I, Tonya, among others, she will likely knock it out of the park.
Tobey Maguire: Babylon (24th Dec 2022)
Tobey Maguire has delivered some great performances in The Great Gatsby, Spider-Man and Brothers, among others. When it was announced that he will be joining the cast for Babylon, a lot of fans were wondering how big his role would be.
He is going to be playing the character of James McKay, and no other details have been revealed about his role yet, seeing him in the trailer itself has roused a lot of excitement, especially after fans just saw him return as Spiderman in Spider-Man Far From Home.
Paul Reiser: Whiplash (2014)
Paul Reiser has had a prolific acting career for more than three decades. Most of his projects include My Two Dads, Mad About You and, of course, Whiplash. Whiplash is one of the most nerve-wracking movies ever and Paul Reiser had quite an understated yet important role in the film.
Even though his role was quite short in the movie, where he played Andrew’s father, his earnest performance, along with his chemistry with Miles Teller became the emotionally grounding point of the movie. He has most recently been seen as Dr. Sam Owens in Stranger Things, but is also now filming Beverly Hills Cop 4.
Claire Foy: First Man (2018)
Claire Foy has had a proliferous career over the past two decades, and fans will recognize her from her portrayal of the young Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown, a role for which she also won an Emmy.
In Chazelle’s First Man, she played the character of Neil Armstrong’s wife, Janet Armstrong. Her performance here added a touch of needed humanity to a story surrounding the launch of Apollo 11. As she played a supporting character in the movie, fans were left wanting more, so it will be interesting to see if she and Chazelle will collaborate again.
