10 Filmmakers Who Should Join The MCU (& The Project They Should Direct), According To Reddit

[ad_1]

One of the most exciting upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe projects is Blade, but it has suffered several setbacks including losing director Bassim Tariq. There’s a lot of discussion over who could replace him, but Marvel Studios will have to act fast given that there’s so much at stake.

But Redditors believe there are so many other directors who should join the MCU too, and they even mention the projects they think they should direct. Between surreal filmmaker David Lynch, the acclaimed Greta Gerwig, and even the explosion-loving Michael Bay, these could deliver great MCU movies with an auteur’s touch.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Matt Reeves – Daredevil

Gsauce8 wants to see Matt Reeves helm a Daredevil movie, but they admit that it may be too similar to a certain other movie of his. The Redditor notes, “Matt Reeves would be amazing for Daredevil, but I think since he’s already made The Batman, the two movies would be too close to each other.”

Daredevil: Born Again, an 18-episode Disney+ series, has just recently been announced. While filmmakers have directed whole Disney+ MCU series, such as Matt Shakman directing WandaVision and Kate Herron directing Loki, those were only eight or nine episodes. Singlehandedly directing 18 full episodes is a daunting task and the show will likely bring in different guest directors as the Star Wars Disney+ series do. Though Reeves is hard at work on The Batman 2 script, he could be a guest director for an episode.

The Wachowski Sisters – X-Men

omgItsGhostDog wants to see the Wachowski sisters direct X-Men. Though nothing the directing duo has made comes close to the phenomenon that was The Matrix, there’s no denying that they have such a unique sense of style regardless of what people think of their post-Matrix output.

Speed Racer is a dazzling and spectacular-looking thrill ride with such a sense of speed, and Cloud Atlas is a sci-fi epic that tells such a profound and multi-stranded story. In that respect, there’d be no better directors to helm X-Men. The inevitable MCU movie is yet to be announced, but it could be the perfect project for the Wachowskis to get back their creative mojo following the underwhelming The Matrix Resurrections.

David Lynch – WandaVision

David Lynch is one of the greatest storytellers of this generation, as fans are still trying to solve the mysteries of Mulholland Drive over 20 years later. TCBourbon thinks that WandaVision should have been directed by the Twin Peaks creator, which is incredibly easy to imagine given that the Disney+ show was essentially Lynch-lite.

It’s unlikely that WandaVision will get a season 2 given that the story continues in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but the show could definitely have been stranger and more mysterious if Lynch was in the director’s chair. The show itself was clearly inspired by Lynch’s dark and surreal thrillers, such as the way it has the viewer solve puzzles about the beekeeper and the toy plane.

Zack Snyder – Midnight Sons

Zack Snyder might be on team DC, as he directed three DCEU movies, but Ivan_Redditor wants to see the visually-oriented director take on an MCU movie. But if those DC movies were his audition for Marvel Studios, he was unsuccessful, as Man of Steel, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League were completely polarizing and divisive amongst fans, and the latter completely alienated those who weren’t knowledgable about the source material.

However, the Redditor picks a project that would be perfect for Snyder’s style-over-substance approach. The user thinks the filmmaker should direct a Midnight Sons movie, which many predict will be a Phase 6 movie. The team-up movie features the coolest Marvel characters, including Ghost Rider, Doctor Strange, and Blade, and it also helps that Snyder often leans into horror elements in his movies.

Greta Gerwig – The New Mutants

AndrewCole14 comments, “Wouldn’t mind seeing Greta Gerwig tackle The New Mutants. Lady Bird with powers.” Greta Gerwig has worked her way up the Hollywood ladder naturally. She first directed a couple of low-budget movies, then a mid-budget movie, and she’s now currently directing the Margot Robbie and Ryan Reynolds-starring Barbie, which is scheduled for release next year. The logical next step could only be a blockbuster superhero movie with her unique flair when it comes to writing brilliant female characters.

The New Mutants would have been the perfect vessel for that if a New Mutants movie wasn’t released just a couple of years ago. The movie bombed at the box office and was slammed by critics, so it’s unlikely that Marvel Studios would want to remind fans of that film any time soon. Nevertheless, if the studio ever did greenlight a New Mutants movie, Gerwig should get that call from Kevin Feige.

Edgar Wright – Young Avengers

Edgar Wright has already been attached to an MCU movie before, as he was attached to Ant-Man before he was replaced by Peyton Reed due to creative differences. It seems unlikely that Wright would work with Marvel Studios again, as it sounds like that bridge was burned on both ends, but it doesn’t stop Hitsmiley from dreaming.

The Redditor suggests, “I’d pick Edgar Wright for something I feel like is his style. Like Young Avengers.” Young Avengers is clearly being set up in the MCU with America Chavez, Ms. Marvel, and other younger characters recently introduced. And as Wright has proven with Scott Pilgrim vs. the World that he can direct fantastical superhero movies about teenagers, it’s a perfect match.

Jordan Peele – Blade

FieldsingAround wants to see horror auteur Jordan Peele take on the vampire hunter movie. The Redditor comments, “Would love to see them bring in Jordan Peele for the project. If he was going to take on any Marvel project, this would be it.” Though there’s no known reason why, Blade just recently lost its director, Bassim Tariq, and Marvel Studios now has to scramble to find a new director if it wants the movie to meet its November 2023 release date.

However, after making studios hundreds of millions with relatively low-budget films, Peele undoubtedly now comes with a huge price tag, and having written all of his movies, he probably wouldn’t be happy directing somebody else’s script either. But there’s no doubt that he’d be a great fit for the project.

Peter Jackson – Thor 5

Peter Jackson is known for directing huge blockbuster epics, with the crown jewel in his filmography being the Lord of the Rings trilogy. But outside of documentaries, the filmmaker hasn’t made a movie since 2013’s The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies. And there’s only one series in the MCU that’s epic enough to follow the Middle-Earth saga, and that’s Thor.

Apprehensive_Egg6656 wants to see the filmmaker create an epic fifth movie in the franchise, and the director has been set up to pull that off perfectly. As Thor: Love and Thunder introduced so many gods, whether it’s all the Greek gods or the absurd Bao god, Thor 5 has so much potential for an epic battle between gods. Jackson could deliver a massacre that audiences should have seen with Gorr in the fourquel.

Chloe Zhao – Valentina Solo Movie

Chloe Zhao has already directed an MCU movie, which was 2021’s poorly-received Eternals. The movie is the only “rotten” MCU release on Rotten Tomatoes, but the source material didn’t exactly play to the filmmaker’s strengths. Zhao’s other releases have followed singular characters on a personal journey, as opposed to a huge, sprawling movie with 12 main characters.

MuNansen thinks they have the best idea for a Zhao-directed MCU movie, positing, “Maybe get Louis-Dreyfus for a Valentina drama. Just see the crushing pressures on a woman trying to run the world. Would be right in Chloe’s wheelhouse, and would be completely unique for the MCU.” The character will have a large role in the upcoming Thunderbolts, but she’s such a larger-than-life character that a solo film could work.

Michael Bay – Ultimates

Michael Bay is such a divisive filmmaker and most movie buffs turn their noses up at the filmmaker’s glossy and obnoxiously loud action movies. However, those films are still fun popcorn flicks, and they attract huge audiences. And this user thinks Bay should take on Ultimates. The Redditor explains, “Michael Bay makes loud, immature action films for 13-year-old boys. Of course, he’d be perfect for an Ultimates movie.”

Referring to the Transformers movies, the user is being a little harsh on the director, who also directed beloved ’90s movies like The Rock. But Ultimates is absolutely the best MCU project for Bay, as it follows a group of supersoldiers run by the government, and it’d grant so many opportunities for huge explosions.
