October is here, and as tradition suggests, Mike Flanagan is back with another thrilling horror drama series for Netflix. The Midnight Club was released a few days ago and is already creating quite a stir on social media while climbing Netflix’s Top 10 charts. The horror thriller centers on a group of five terminally ill teenagers and young adults who live at the Brightcliffe Hospice facility. Every midnight, the group comes together to tell scary stories and look for clues that the supernatural horrors they talk about are real.
Flanagan is a master of the horror drama genre, and he continues to push himself. The Midnight Club even already broke a Guinness World Record for most jump scares. The series continues to deliver some of the best horror tropes while also weaving difficult storylines into the mix, considering the series is based on a true story. With 10 episodes, it’s the perfect show to kick off a Halloween binge session and can easily be followed up by any of these other great shows.
American Horror Story (2011 – )

American Horror Story is one of the best and longest-running horror anthology seasons on the air. The series is headed into its eleventh season, which is set to release its first episode on October 19th.
With 10 seasons out there, there are plenty of options for where to start if watching all 10 seems too daunting and scary. Fans who loved the setting of The Midnight Club might favor AHS: Asylum, while fans who loved the young adult nature of the series might enjoy AHS: Coven or AHS: 1984.
Cruel Summer (2021 – )

Cruel Summer is one of the newest entries that is on its way to being one of the best Freeform shows ever. An anthology thriller, the series follows two teenage girls on the same day over the course of three years whose lives are inexplicitly intertwined.
Both Cruel Summer and The Midnight Club take place in the ’90s. They both also center on teenagers and young adults who are, unfortunately, dealing with some pretty scary things — both in real life and supernaturally. Cruel Summer is the perfect show to watch next for fans who enjoyed the thriller aspect of The Midnight Club.
Locke & Key (2020 – 2022)

Based on the comic book series of the same name, Locke & Key centers on the Locke family, who relocate to their father’s ancestral home after his mysterious murder. As the three siblings settle in, they discover various mysterious keys that unlock doors in magical ways. The only problem is that a demonic entity is also searching for the keys.
Like The Midnight Club, Locke & Key really focuses on its young adult characters, which brings a certain level of youngness to the show. They also are both full of exciting and chilling twists and turns that might make viewers jump from their seats.
One Of Us Is Lying (2021 – )

One Of Us Is Lying is based on the mystery young-adult novel written by Karen M. McManus. Like the book, the series centers on five students from different high school cliques who all end up in detention together. Things take a turn when one of them dies suddenly in detention, leaving the four survivors prime suspects.
Both One Of Us Is Lying and The Midnight Club have been described as genre-bending The Breakfast Club tributes because of the eccentric and diverse group of young characters in both. Though One Of Us Is Lying is more mystery than horror, the series has its fair share of chilling moments, like The Midnight Club.
Open Your Eyes (2021 – )

Open Your Eyes is a Polish supernatural thriller, but the language barrier shouldn’t stop Netflix subscribers from checking out this series. After finding herself in an amnesia treatment center after a fatal accident, Julia begins to befriend the other patients since they’re all she has now. However, when Julia begins experiencing hyperrealistic dreams, she begins to question the validity of the center.
Like The Midnight Club, Open Your Eyes centers on a patient who is dealing with something they have little control over. Both shows also follow the characters as they investigate the facilities they are in, and question whether or not they’re doing more harm than good.
Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin (2022 – )

Five years after the original ended, Pretty Little Liars got a fresh Gen-Z reboot when Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin began airing on HBO Max. The mystery series centers on a new group of five girls who find themselves being tormented by an unknown assailant that may be connected to their mothers’ past wrongdoings.
While the characters in The Midnight Club aren’t being stalked like the girls in PLL: Original Sin, both groups of teenagers are dealing with some pretty horrific events. They also must learn to lean on each other if they want to figure out what is really going on.
Red Band Society (2014)

Red Band Society is one of the unfortunate shows to succumb to the dreaded canceled after one season club. The drama series followed a group of teenagers who are all patients at a hospital’s pediatric ward. Each dealing with their own diagnosis, the teens also deal with ordinary teenage trials and tribulations like dating, heartbreak, and of course, friendship.
While there are no horror, thriller, or supernatural elements in Red Band Society, the series is similar to The Midnight Club since all the characters in the ladder are also terminally ill. None of the characters in these shows let their diagnosis stop them from doing what they want — even if it’s chasing after potential supernatural forces.
The Haunting Of Bly Manor (2020)

The second series in Flanagan’s The Haunting anthology series, The Haunting Of Bly Manor, follows a young au pair who is hired to watch over a man’s niece and nephew after they end up in his care. It’s not long before the au pair begins seeing things that appear to be haunting the home.
Given that both series are created by Flanagan, it only makes sense for audiences to check out The Haunting Of Bly Manor if they loved The Midnight Club and haven’t already seen the former. Both feature amazing storytelling and feel very cinematic. The Haunting Of Bly Manor is also less of a horror series, so it’s perfect for fans who liked the style of The Midnight Club but not so much the horror elements.
The Haunting Of Hill House (2018)

Loosely based on a 1959 novel of the same name, The Haunting Of Hill House is the first installment in The Haunting anthology series. Described as a supernatural horror drama, the series centers on the Crain family in the past and the present. After fleeing the house when tragedy strikes, the family reunites 26 years later when another strategy strikes, and the family must confront their lives in their former home.
The Haunting of Hill House is perfect for fans of The Midnight Club who loved the mystery and paranormal aspects of the series. Given it’s a Flanagan creation, both shows push the boundaries when it comes to production values and includes some hair-raising moments.
The Order (2019 – 2020)

The Order is another one of Netflix’s original horror drama shows. The series centers on Jack, a college student, who joins a secret order in an attempt to avenge his mother’s death. However, he gets more than he bargained for when he learns some unpleasant family secrets and the fact that there is an underground war going on between werewolves and dark magicians.
Like The Midnight Club, The Order centers on relentless young adult characters who won’t stop until they get the answer they believe they’re entitled. Both shows also deal with dark forces in some way, shape, or form.
